Happy Birthday at 100 Years!

Today I enjoyed making a few portraits of a lady (Geri) who has her 100th birthday this week. 100 years old! Or 100 years young? She is a nice woman and a strong woman with a sly sense of humor. She laughs, she smiles, she is a sharp cookie and trong in spirit and strong in will. Her son (74) told me she is “tough as nails.” She is a cancer survivor (major operation), and has survived a serious heart attack.

She traveled alone and took a tramp steamer to Yugoslavia when she was 67. She grew up in Iowa, but has traveled to the Far East and Europe. I asked her if she had any unfulfilled wishes to see a place or do a thing. She reflected on that and then answered: “No, I have lived a good life and am satisfied.” Remarkably, she lives by herself in her own home (since her 50s when her husband died) and she still gets around (walking herself to the car etc.). She gardens and is proud of her home and garden, saying it is the nicest yard in the neighborhood. I asked her about the key to her longevity and she simply smiled and said: “I walk a lot, and always have all my life…I used to walk 5 miles everyday to work.”

I could see she is a strong woman, so I asked her if she had a weakness for anything.

She thought a few seconds and replied with a smile: “Dark Chocolate.”

I am told she plays a mean game of cards (poker or bridge) and has a lot of what Westerners (people who live in the Western USA) call “Grit.” I admire her and enjoyed spending time with her.

I would like your help. Her birthday is this week. If you are inspired by her and would write a few words of birthday greetings for her, I will pass those to her later this week when I join her at her birthday party. And IF you want to send her some Dark Chocolate as a gift, contact me and I will give you an address where you can send it.

Thank you for the time and the spirit you put in this photography forum, enhancing not only the photographer’s work but also the dialog on the art approach. Your eye, your technical skills, your friendly tone of voice helped many of the members, and I’m one of them.

And because you like french words, I will say :

Lorsqu’on marche en poussant les cailloux sur le chemin et qu’on ne soulève que de la poussière, on s’interroge sur l’utilité de la marche, des cailloux et même du chemin. On s’assied alors un peu désespéré.

Bien qu’il soit un inconnu, il est déja un ami, ce voyageur venu de loin, qui prend le temps de s’asseoir à nos côtés, nous chante les beautés du chemin et nous apprend à marcher sur les nuages.

When walking by pushing the stones on the path and that it raises as dust, one wonders about the utility of the march, rocks and even the way. It sits a little bit desperate.

Although it is unknown, he is already a friend, the friends come from afar, who takes the time to sit with us, we sing the beauties of the road and we learn to walk on the clouds.

Merci Steady

Yves

Steady is our Mentor from afar.

The soothing voice of gentle criticism mixed with inspiration and hope for the improvement of our craft. There are so many comments I have read which, while not directed at me or my work, have helped me to see ‘better’ than I would have before.

Steady is a TRUE example of the type of kind soul and passionate fellow photographer that makes boards like this work as they are intended.

By sharing a view, a comment, or a critique in such encouraging and non-confrontational manners, he demonstrates how it really should be done.

In addition to being a better photographer, I feel that he can teach me to be a better mentor when the time comes that I might be one.

Very deep regards and thanks to you Steady!

Norman (Canada)

After reading all the great comments/replies to my pictures, I’d still have to say

His were the most well organized and easy to understand critiques.

Name Withheld

As one of those who lurk and occasionally comment I would like to add my appreciation of Steady too.

I look at all the photos on a post, try to comment on them in my own head and then try to compare to Steady’s opinion. I have learned so much from his constructive advice, thank you.

Seren

UK

I have been here (on another forum) for a year or so…it took me a while to get Steady and see how nice of a person he really is…and that

he truly just has a different eye on images then a lot of us do.

He always catches things that would take an image from good to great or from OK to great…

I think this community owes him a huge thanks for all the contribution and all the time he has put in here…

Sam

I just wanted to say thank you for all the time that you spend mentoring. I haven’t had a lot of time to spend on (the other photography community) the last few months because I just had a new baby and I’m still working at photography when I can carve out the time. Anyway,

you have always encouraged me and others to learn to use natural light,

and challenged me to get my exposures and white balance right the first time and not rely on fixing it later with Lightroom.

Last night, I had a family photo shoot and I will admit I do love to use a little bit of fill flash and have gotten pretty handy with it but

last night both of my flashes had the batteries die and I didn’t have spares.

But thanks to you- since I’ve learned to use available light and the amazing white foam board( which is also now a staple in my studio) I wasn’t stressed at all.

I just used my camera and the sun. I think they turned out well and I think my clients will be happy. So, thanks again for all the time you spend helping others out.

You’ve helped me to become a better photographer and certainly saved me a world of stress last night.

Teresa

He is great. I still have a lot to learn and

every time he posts I feel like I learn a bit more.

Todd

As an almost full time lurker I feel I have to break my silence and agree with the overall sentiment being posted here.

His thoughtful and well composed comments and critique are wonderful to read as well as being instructional and inspirational for many like me…

Edward

From a long time lurker, I cannot express how helpful his comments have been to me. My every day ritual is to check these posts and see what else I can learn from him. I’m sure he has no idea how many he has helped.

I agree…..group hug!

Heartland

I’ve seen many of Steady’s (critiques) and appreciate the thought, care and insights that go into them.

Thanks, Steady.

Adam

Even from just reading what he says about others photos I have learned a lot about photographing people.

Jax

Cheers to the time spent offering help to myself and others.

Name Withheld (Canada)

Ditto, many times over. Steady is a hero to everyone who wants to learn.

Don

Steady exemplifies the best of what can be found…straightforward helpful advice for those trying to improve.

Thank you Steady,

John

(Steadman) has provided good insight and has been a big help. I appreciate his help and kind attitude.

David

Steadman has shown a great deal of skill, knowledge, kindness, patience and dedication to helping us all improve.

Brian

You are a jewel to the (photo community) my friend. ALWAYS genuine and clearly a great hearted human being.

Sam

Often said, scarcely more aptly than here, Steadman is truly a gentleman and a scholar.

Cal

Steady, your comments and suggestions show your real concern for others.

Your comments and suggestions don’t turn off but motivate and excite one to improve and do better.

I have taken your comments and suggestions to heart and thank you.

Richard

Steady represents the kind of online friend to which we should all aspire.

Doug

Agree with the sentiments above.

He can certainly foster mature dialogue in midst of disagreement.

Nij

Steady is what this (photo community) is all about, or should be all about.

He provides positive and insightful critique to help others improve. He does it with a polite, caring and helpful attitude and imparts his vast knowledge of photography and technique.

He may not always like the photo he is critiquing but he finds a gentle way to tell the poster what he thinks could improve the photo be it lighting, posing, background or a myriad of other helpful suggestions.

When a poster disagrees with him, he doesn’t take it personally and is the first to admit that his taste is sometimes isn’t in tune with the poster.

He expresses a desire to learn more about the reasons for the photo (i.e. the story behind it) so he can better appreciate what the poster is trying to convey.

His recent series of “Impressions” made many of us think about the person in his posting and what it said to us as photographers.

I look forward to his replies and suggestions and try to absorb as much as I can from his professional and helpful advice.

Bob

I agree with all the comments in this thread, Steady is a pillar on the (photo community).

Rob

What a blessing you are.

Herman (Uganda)

Steady is just about as genuine as they come. I truly appreciate his approach along with his artistic and creative, professional ability.

Name Withheld

Steady is THE BEST! I’ve gained so much insight from him.

Tim

Thank you for the insight, Steady! It is always appreciated.

Malone

When you look at his photo, you feel the warmth of a friend (his eyes are sincere), a close friend.

His words of encouragement and criticizm are helpful and made with nothing but love for his craft and to help others better themselves.

I would love to meet him and buy him a drink.

Name Withheld

I appreciate ALL his words! Criticism coming from him is PERFECT and delivered nicely.

Matt

A true asset… I appreciate the time you take giving careful well thought comments… Even though they may not have been in one of my posts I have learned a ton…

Name Withheld

Yeah Steady! We have a completely different style, but your comments have been extremely helpful.

Rian

Wow…this is great and well deserved. I also want to thank you Steady for your contributions to this (photo community) and to me personally. You have proven very helpful for me in the past year as I have begun to explore photography more seriously.

Jon

Careful, measured, knowlegeable and appreciated.

Tim

Steadman does more for the forums and the people that frequent these forums than anyone else. His perspective is always refreshing / professional / detailed / and sometimes inspiring.

Anthony

Want to let you know that I have learned so much by reading your suggestions. You obviously put time into your responses and you do it in a non-threatening way that lets everyone learn.

Jeff

Your comments have been very helpful and cause me to think. I really appreciate your insight.

Name Withheld

I am always astounded by your awesome critiques.

You are the kind of person that make this (photo community) great.

I have been totally blown away by your C&C (critiques and comments) on this forum.

Your critique is simply amazing.

Your thoughts are well organized, comments well written and advice given in the most non-offensive and constructive terms possible.

And your advice is always thoughtful and helpful. I felt compelled to send you a PM and let you know how much I really appreciate those posts

Dave

I think that Steady’s insights have helped me to dig much deeper into portrait and even street photography.

I think the highest honor would be to watch him in a studio for a day just to see his approach, interaction with the subject and then see the results.

I would think that it would be better than a college degree in photography!

Rich

I often read his posts after taking some time to examine the photo, and I am amazed at how much more he sees in the photo than I do.

A perfect example of encouraging and constructive critique.

JP

When I first posted (photos on a forum), I was worried about critiques and criticism. I wanted honesty but did not want to be cut up.

What happened was Steady’s responses have been more then beneficial, they are examples that I think we all not only learn more about photography, from his critiques but from his example, we learn respect for each others opinions and how to share them.

Stan

You’ve been a class act since the beginning.

Paul

Steady, I didn’t really understand why a thread was created in tribute to you, but now I understand.

I really appreciate your thoughtful and thorough comments and now realize how a little bit of background or history can go a long way in appreciating an image.

Mike

I must say it was such a pleasure to see that you (write) such wonderfully thoughtful and concise words to people looking for input.

You have a gentle style which combined with your wisdom makes for a very receptive environment for people to come and not be ashamed or intimidated to post their work.

just wanted to give you a big “thank you” and let you know that your caring input is greatly appreciated.

I am not sure enough people tell you how much your input means to this (photography community), so I want to make sure I did.

Zak

I am writing because I wanted to personally say thank you for all of the help that you have given people like me on the boards.

I think you are a true asset…and I’ve learned a lot just by reading your feedback to others.

You’ve helped me indirectly with all the positive comments you post on others work that is directed to help them see what they have potentially done wrong…then how to turn that around next time and really capture a beautiful image.

I genuinely feel honored that you take the time to respond in such a way. When I see your images I feel I have a level to aim for. Your work is an inspiration to me, and to others, and without sounding too sycophantic I think it would be a real honour to visit your gallery and view your art. I feel proud to be able to participate in your Impressions series. Thanks to you for allowing me to be a part of it.

In truth I am impressed by the knowledge, detail and length of your replies, I am humbled yet inspired by your comments.

I and my photographic skills, as well as this board are better because you have taken the time and effort to share your wisdom. You have great communication skills.

I am continually amazed by the insightful, comprehensive and honest Critiques and Comments that you offer others …as it is a wonderful source of help to others (like myself) with less experience.

Your C&C stands out from the rest as truly exceptional.

I am one person who recognizes your kind, thoughtful and very helpful comments.

I really enjoy your professional insight and willingness to share.

I’ll admit, it took me a little while to figure out if Steady was ‘for real’.

I think your Impressions posts are a wonderful idea and thoroughly enjoy them. I am very much a beginner and don’t feel that I can add much to the forums from a technical point of view, but,

your Impressions (discussions of images) give everybody an opportunity to contribute but just as important they make us think about the images and what mood or feeling you were trying to capture.

Bob

What stands out to me is your aptitude for capturing someone’s essence, if you will, with a very simple image. I think I’ve seen you allude to your striving for simplicity with your work, and I find that sort of simplicity/minimalism very appealing in photography.

You seem to have your style pretty well-refined. I’m very much in the midst of working out my own style and probably still have some basics to learn.

I think I would like to figure out how to make money with it, though in that regard I have hardly a clue where to begin.
I definitely admire your work. I find it interesting that you’re also a painter.

Since I have been reading your (comments and image critiques) I have started to critique my own photography (mostly Landscape) to the point of improving my enjoyment considerably because I have moved from “that will look cool” to ” what do I want to say about this ” which means that I get more involved in my images.

I do not answer or comment very much as most of the time my reaction is “that’s cool” or ” that doesn’t get me” without really understanding why. By following your questions and comments I am starting to understand my why. Thank you.

You’re a champ for taking the time to put something like this together.

There is this looming reluctance to participate in the critiquing aspect of others work though. The simple reason for this is that I just don’t feel like I’m qualified to tell others where they need to make improvements. For that reason, I also feel like it’s unfair of me to ask others to look at my work and provide suggestions when I’m not willing or capable, from an experience perspective, of returning the favor.

I always find your approach to critiquing very helpful and done in the most tasteful manner.

Summary: The comments below are verbatim quotes from the father of one of my subjects in my current project, Equestrian Portraits.

For this particular client, I have created a set of unique and extraordinary portraits and images of his daughter, her horse, and his daughter with her horse. Most of these images are not shown on this site or the internet on purpose, as they are also intended for inclusion in a future book on my work.

Verbatim Testimonial Letter from the Parent of an Equestrian Subject

To Whom it May Concern: “In the last 14 years that our daughter has ridden horses and competed, we have taken thousands of photos of our daughter and had many professional photographers take her picture as she performed in countless horse shows or competitions. Steadman’s photos, taken both at our barn’s arena while our daughter practiced and at our home are unlike any that I have seen before.”“Steadman made his artistic portraits of our daughter in a small space in our house, yet the photos look like they were made in a large studio. I am amazed at how he does it. I have a nice DSLR camera and I take lots of photos of my daughter, but he was able to capture something else and something new and unique.”

“Some of the most interesting and unique images Steadman made are not shown on his posters or his website. He told us about this prior to photographing our daughter, and I did not really understand at the time. Now I understand. You really need to see these for yourself. It is amazing to see how a single photo session can yield so many different looks and expressions and how he uses his artist’s eye to make something special for each person. He made some pictures for my daughter that I am sure she will use for years because they are elegant and striking. These are not ordinary portrait photographs.”“It was a real honor that Steadman selected one image from our daughter’s session to create a work of his art using our horse as the model. He told us that was something he had as a goal and I just did not anticipate the image being so beautiful and surprisingly different. I have photographed that horse many times and I never saw this and I have not seen anything like it from any other photographer or artist. We are very proud it is one of our horses. It is not just another portrait, it is art.”

“Steadman also made some incredible photos of my daughter practicing in a large dark indoor arena in the dead of winter. I don’t know how he did it. It amazed me that he did this without using any flash at all, so he would not disturb the horse and rider. He just used the natural light that was available to him. The photos are beautiful and natural looking. When I first saw them, I said “WOW.”

“I highly recommend that everyone who loves horses take advantage of this chance to get something special by Steadman. These are not just snapshots and they are not the common event photos we see at every competition. We have seen many professional equine photographers as we have traveled the country to competitions, including the Nationals, the Colorado Horse Park, and the Kentucky Horse Park, and these photos Steadman has made are unlike anything I have seen before. These portraits Steadman will make of your horse and the rider are going to be something you will not regret buying. These stand out from the crowd. Steadman Uhlich and his art are definitely “World Class.”"

“He definitely has a different approach to working with people and horses. I now know why so many people have trusted him to make something special. It is rare to find someone whom you can trust so much and still be surprised at the outcome and have your expectations exceeded.”

“As a parent of someone who loves horses and has competed locally, regionally and even nationally for years, and as an owner of multiple horses, I know that it is smart to invest in quality. I cannot over-emphasize the high quality of what you will get if you hire Steadman to make a portrait of you or your horse. We know that our horse will be a part of our family for several more years and we are prepared to spend what it takes to care for that horse and to help our daughter get where she wants to go in competition. With a portrait by Steadman, we will have a beautiful, extraordinary, and lasting reminder of that horse and our rider’s beauty. These really are heirlooms in the making. Without a doubt, he is worth it.”

— Dr. M.W., Omaha, Nebraska

Second Example of Visiting Artist Program Results for a Host Family

Verbatim Testimonial Letter from the Parent of an Equestrian Subject. The parent was also a Host Participant in Steadman’s Visiting Artist Program.

To whom it may concern:
I did not know Steadman Uhlich prior to meeting him recently after seeing his work. I checked into his background, looked at his online portfolios, read his testimonials, and after discussing this with my husband, we decided to host Steadman at our home as participants in his Visiting Artists Program. I am very glad we made that decision.

We are “Empty Nesters” and my husband and I first met with Steadman and spent some hours getting to know him. He has proven to be a good house guest, good company, and even a good cook. My husband and I have enjoyed many hours of conversations with him and time spent together at horse events and dinners. I feel we have not only gained things in art created for us, but we have also made a new friend. He is someone you can trust. Now as our time as his hosts has reached an end, I want to share with you my experience as a Host in his Visiting Artist Program.

Soon after arriving, Steadman arranged a photo session with my adult daughter and her horses. I was present at the photo shoot and observed how he worked with her, the horses and her dogs.
Despite the cold weather, the windy conditions, the leaf-less trees and the rather drab surroundings of a typical Omaha winter’s day, Steadman told us the conditions were very good for portraits.
I was a bit apprehensive because our horses are in their furry winter coats. I was not sure if those would look good in a photo. Steadman assured us the furry winter condition of their coats would be a positive thing to see in the final photos.

A few days after the photo shoot, Steadman showed us the results from his work. I was surprised by how quickly we were able to see some results from the photo shoot. While I had viewed many of Steadman’s portraits in his online portfolios, I was not prepared for what I saw in the work he had done for us.

First, let me tell you that my daughter has ridden and competed with horses for many years. She rides Western, Rodeo and English styles of riding. I have been around horses all my life and worked with them professionally. I have many photos of my daughter and her horses taken by professional photographers. So I have a good idea of how she and the horses look when photographed by a typical professional photographer.

What did I see when I saw the photos Steadman made for us? I was completely surprised by Steadman’s portraits of our horses. While I had been present the entire time and had been just a few feet from the horse, I did not imagine the finished portraits would look as they did. My first impression when seeing the portraits was “WOW!”

Putting it simply, these are not your typical horse photos. Steadman’s vision for these horses made them look special.

I had earlier worried a bit that the winter coat furry look of our horses would not look good. When Steadman showed us the final portraits, I then saw how the natural winter coat looked wonderful in his photos. The textures of the hair and mane look so real and life-like it looks like our horse is standing right in front of you and you could reach into the picture to touch his hair. I had also worried some that the harsh sunlight of the day, and the drab leaf-less trees and surrounding land of the season would not look good for the photo session. I can tell you that the finished portrait and photos look amazing and the background of your barn or paddock is no reason to be concerned.

When I showed the photo of my daughter with her horse to my colleagues at work, other friends, and other horse people, they were all very impressed by the high quality and the expression of emotion shown in the photo.

We have all seen photos of girls holding their horse, but this was a photo that showed us all the joy she feels with that horse. This portrait of my daughter with her horse stands out from the hundreds of portraits I have seen of my daughter’s friends and other riders with their horses. It made me glad I took the step to hire Steadman.

Steadman works well with horses and sees the details of good horsemanship too. Steadman has an eye for details and for the beauty of the individual. His portraits of my daughter capture her spirit, her confidence, and her skill at handling a horse. When you see the large prints, you can see the details of good horsemanship that make a difference. He captured that in stunning photos that really must be seen large to be fully appreciated.

As Steadman is learning about horses and how to handle them, he worked well with the horses. As he captures them in action, he never used a flash. Because he never uses a flash, the horses are comfortable around the camera; it shows as a relaxed look in their eyes, in every portrait. His use of natural light in the barn and outside was amazing.

Steadman also surprised us with a unique work of art in another photo. He calls this image “Moonlight” as it shows our gelding by moonlight. His art photo of one of our horses really looks like a painting. Steadman showed us a very large print of this and it is hard to describe how impressive it appears when anyone sees the larger print. Steadman also spent the time and helped me consider the best ways to show it in our home, including choices of frames, lighting, location, and sizes that fit our home decor.

Over the many years I have shown, ridden, and been around horses, I have never seen an art photo like this. It is unique and beautiful. It IS a work of art. And it is OUR horse that is now art.

You might see a little version of this on Steadman’s website, but you must see a large print to get a real understanding of how impressive it is.

I recently went to the Nebraska Horse Expo and while there viewed over 100 photos of horses that had been entered in a photography contest. There was nothing there that was as impressive as Steadman’s photos. Even the photos entered and displayed by professional photographers looked ordinary in comparison.

Steadman also works well with kids. Steadman also created very special portrait photos of my two young grand daughters. He captured their personalities and the photos are really beautiful, funny, and touching. These portraits are also unlike any I have seen before. He created one while working with horses and a young girl, I didn’t think that would be easy. The other portrait was created while working with my youngest grand daughter who is two years old and full of energy. His suggestions for how to make these special portraits have given our family something priceless that crosses generations.

Steadman works well with mature women too. Like many middle-aged women, I was apprehensive about having a portrait photograph of me. Steadman worked with me and my concerns, helped me get the confidence to get in front of his camera, and made the experience fun. He also made me look 10 years younger too! All of this was done in a natural setting that reflects my life and my love of horses.

I recommend you take this opportunity to have Steadman make a portrait of you or your horse or someone in your family, regardless of their age. Based on my own experience, I am confident the results will pleasantly surprise you and be something you will consider a good decision and an excellent purchase. I believe you can trust Steadman to do as he promises and even that he will probably exceed your expectations.

Furthermore, if you have the means to serve as a Host for him within his Visiting Artist Program, I believe it is a fabulous opportunity for you or your family. His work speaks for itself, but I must tell you that there are things he makes that you will not see on his website. We saw them created and they are and now we understand the special experience of having art created for us by a true artist.

Steadman created portraits for a friend of mine too. I can also tell you that he has also created four portraits for a close friend of mine who is another client of his. I learned about Steadman after seeing her portraits. Those portraits are also wonderful as they capture the character of her children and husband.

What Impression will your portrait make?

The hundreds of Global Impressions comments seen via the colorful link blocks below are a reflection of what people see in the portraits, art photographs, and paintings made by Steadman Uhlich.

What matters is how people who did not know the people in the photos/portraits/art were moved and impressed by the photos of people and the photos of things and the paintings.

The most common comment heard uttered by literally thousands of SUFA Gallery visitors was simply: “WOW!”

If you are considering purchase of a fine art photo by Steadman, you might hear comments like this from people who admire that photo in your home or office.

If you are considering commissioning a portrait by Steadman, you might hear similar comments regarding your portrait.

Steadman: “I encourage you to read some of the Global Impressions comments so you can see how others see these extraordinary portraits.”

Want to see more examples?

There are 350+ examples of my other work on this website and in my online portfolios (links found elsewhere on this site). As for equestrian portraits and art images, there are many beautiful and striking (and unique) images that will NOT be shown on the internet until my book on the subject is published. On this page you will find just a few examples of a few of the styles I will be making this year as part of this project.

These small images represent just a few of the many and varied styles I have developed specifically for this art photography project. Some of my many styles are “Classic” and “Timeless” and “Avant Garde.”

You should see these yourself as large prints and if we meet in person, I can show you numerous prints and large examples. They are truly beautiful and many are extraordinary and some truly unique.

They cause people to say “WOW!”

Steadman’s Suggestion

“My suggestion to any prospective client: Spend a few minutes and read some of the Global Impressions comments to get an idea what people around the world see, feel, or sense about the character of the person in the picture when viewing these portraits. For example, there are numerous comments from around the world regarding one iconic portrait, “The Cowboy,” found on via the red link button below for the Global Impressions document about The Equestrians. Take a minute and read what people around the world saw in that portrait image and others in this new series.

Many of my earlier fine art portraits and fine art photos in my other collections of art photography have been published in magazines (in feature articles about my art, and as covers) and even as the front cover image for a national art magazine (in which I was the subject of a feature article about my work/art).

Just be aware that MOST of my best images will NOT be seen on the internet (even in my online portfolios or on my own websites) as I reserve them to be published later in books or magazines or as art for sale. Again, there are many beautiful images/photos/portraits I have already made as part of my Equestrian Project that are truly “stunning” and beautiful and have caused people to say “WOW!” Yet, they will NOT be seen on the internet or on my websites.

MOST of my most unusual and special (creative and different or unique) images and many of my personal favorites are not shown on my websites or on the internet (anywhere) until I have published them in a book or magazine or as art.

Those are reserved for private viewing during a consultation with my clients and prospective clients. As an example, my website only shows about 6 small thumbnails of my flower images. Yet there are 200+ striking and unique art images being prepared for a future book on the subject. The same goes for my collections “Art of Cars” and “Art of The Ocean.” Hundreds of beautiful and original images are in those collections too, yet only a handful of thumbnails are shown on the internet on my site.

Here are just a few of the Global Impressions Comments to give you an idea of what people see:

“Beautiful, beautiful images of real people! Thank you for reminding me that beauty exists in imperfections.”

“You have an eye for a woman’s sensuality, a man’s sensitivity, and a child’s innocence. Beautiful!”

“Your photographs embody beauty and character. You take a face most would consider not beautiful and capture the beauty in it for all to see and appreciate. Your work moves me.”

“Strength, grace, humor, intelligence and beauty. I feel as though each of the portraits in your portfolio somehow have aspects of these and that you have managed to get the subject to project their individual personality. The work as a whole illustrates some of the best human qualities there are.”
Gwen, London, UK

“What strikes me is the expression, how each person has a unique personality. Your portraits give an impression from the soul rather than being a mirror image. Every person looks natural and him or herself, that shows to me that you really do the effort to get to know your subjects.” Philippe, Warsaw, Poland

“A very lovely feeling and a wonderful quality…that immediately jumps out to me as being straight to the heart.”
Frank, Emmeloord, The Netherlands

“You don’t communicate through your photos on a physical or even emotional level, but instead on a spiritual level.”
Daan, Utrecht, Netherlands

“I find your photography to be downright beautiful. The lighting, tones, and mood are both powerful and elegant at the same time.
Mark,Lilongwe, Malawi

“I am struck with the way your subjects speak to me. They all have a story to tell and you have captured it.”
Craig, Edmonton Alberta, Canada

“Beautiful! Like a symbol of peace!”
Mamansani, Niamey, Niger

“Mysterious and beautiful!”
Huixian, Taizhou, China

“This portrait shows a man with longevity and prosperity. He looks like a king.”
Mamansani, Niamey, Niger

“Great portrait. Looks like a classic statue in a museum. Wise and powerful.”
Hassan, Karachi Pakistan

“She is absorbed in colors. Like a flower from heaven.”
Kamran, Lahore, Pakistan

“This portrait is truly inspiring. This lady looks as if she represents the whole of India. She is unknown to me, yet I feel as if I know her. I was left breathless.”
Sunil, Navsari, India

“I just love it directly when I saw it. I like the 3D feeling and it’s not just a picture, it lives.”
Denny, Sjöbo, Sweden

“This reminds me of my childhood. Inside a safe home looking out, nose pressed against the glass, big world outside. Full of possibilities and maybe a bit dangerous.”
Stale, Oslo, Norway

“These are some of the most beautiful portraits I have ever seen. Well done.”
Yakim, Rosh Ha-Ayin, Israel

“Your subjects seem to have an ‘aura’ of wisdom and balance. It’s like you have captured them in a moment of personal reflection and even meditation. This is also true for the portraits of the kids. I get the impression it is moe spiritual than physical. It is about the world that lies behind the eyes.”
Daan, Utrecht, Netherlands

How effective can a remote or long distance mentor be in helping a photographer?

Is this a good way to communicate?

One of the obvious concerns that any potential PhotoMentors student or mentee may have is:

“How effective can the communication be if I am in another country far from Steadman?

________

In short, the communication can be HIGHLY effective and very clear and immediately helpful to the mentee.

In my opinion this is FAR SUPERIOR to communicating via a text message!

First Major Advantage

First, remember that this Live Voice Dialog is far superior to the limited communications you might get from short text messages on an internet photography forum. It is MUCH SUPERIOR to text messages. The sound of voice makes this a Real Time DIALOG. That means the communication is IMMEDIATE, CLEAR, and has much more content and many more opportunities to clarify issues and topics.

Second Major Advantage

Secondly, this Live Voice Dialog is just part of what occurs on one of these calls. We are also BOTH viewing the same image at the same time and sharing images and data and files and materials back and forth AS WE SPEAK. This is very much a “CONTENT RICH” exchange of information in a very easy and efficient manner. We don’t even need to use email! By reducing the amount of typing to a minimum (almost nothing) we speed things up and make the information flow more smoothly and more quickly and more easily and more clearly between us!

It really is a HUGE LEAP FORWARD compared to the type of severely limited communications you may have experienced on a photography forum.

I have enjoyed many Live Voice Dialog consultations with people in countries far from the USA.

In all cases, the communication was very clear, easy to understand, stimulating, and fun.

In each case the mentee learned something within a few minutes that they could then apply to their future photography.

___________________

A recent caller said this:

“I really enjoyed this call with you Steadman, you have a way of helping others and I don’t feel like you talk down to people. That made it easy to learn from you. “

___________________

On several other occasions, I have been told that the connection (both technical connection and inter-personal connection) was so clear and good that it sounded like I was sitting in the room with the person and talking in a nice conversation with them. In fact, in almost every case, the voice connection was SUPERIOR to using a regular telephone or cell phone. It was so “crystal clear” that it really sounded like the person was just 2 feet away from me. It is a wonderful sense of “immediacy.”

It is gratifying and appreciated that people calling from other countries or great distances will say: “I think we will become friends based on this mentoring.”

So, the opportunity to learn and improve and communicate on a higher level and more effectively and more deeply about YOUR photography is available to you. All it takes is a call. As mentioned at the bottom of this post, that call can even be FREE if you use “Skype-to-Skype” calling while you are online.

I invite you to call today (your First Introduction Call is free too) and see how it works and to judge for yourself.

The invitation is from me, but the true opportunity is yours.

Steadman’s Notes on the following call:

Here is a recent Verbatim Testimonial Quote from a photographer who lives in Australia (the opposite side of the planet from me and 14 hours time difference from New York). The call was made using a Skype-to-Skype connection over the internet and so the call was FREE to both parties.

In addition, the call was so clear that it was obviously much better than another call made using a regular phone (land line and cell phone). The sound quality was superior.

More importantly than the technical sound clarity of the call itself, the content of the call and the “ability to communicate” made it a very good call with clear statements, easy to understand advice, and a friendly conversational tone of speech.

Verbatim Testimonial Quotes from a Long-Distance (from Australia to USA and a free Skype to Skype) consultation call with Steadman Uhlich

“I contacted Steadman after reading [this] website, via Skype. I was amazed how clear the line [of communication] was, and the ease that Steadman made me feel.

I will proceed with his mentor program, as I find his skill level, and the ability to converse, is what I have been seeking in improving my photography.

We had a 90 minute conversation [with no phone charges for either party], and the ability to define our boundaries, and how we could proceed in mentoring my needs.

So thank you Steadman. I appreciate the time you devote to your passion in helping and assisting people.”

Charles Kalnins, Australia

___________

Steadman’s Notes:

1. The Australia time zone is 12 hours different from New York! Antipode!

2. The mentoring phone call took place using free Skype to Skype calling.

3. The session took place during a time of day that is convenient for the client-mentee. This call was during my flexible Global Operating hours of 9:00AM (0900) to 9:00PM (2100) EST (New York City Time Zone).

4. Images are shared and discussed while both of us view them at the same time.

_______________

What is an Antipode?

In geography, the antipodes of any place on Earth is its antipodal point; that is, the region on the Earth’s surface which is diametrically opposite to it. Two points which are antipodal to one another are connected by a straight line through the centre of the Earth.

I live in a state called Alabama in a region called “the South” or “the Southeast” of the USA at the moment. The antipodal point (directly opposite of my location) is just West of Australia (in the Indian Ocean). Australia is the closest land to my antipode.

You can find your antipodal point on the planet by visiting this site. http://www.antipodemap.com/

You can also find an interesting article with unusual maps of the earth showing antipodes and with lists of cities that are antipodes too at the following wiki article:

Verbatim Testimonial Letter from a consultation with Steadman Uhlich

Note: this Mentoring Session was conducted using voice over the internet (via skype) and image file transfers over the internet with the call taking place between the USA and France. The voice quality was crystal clear (it sounded like we were in the same room), the conversation was fun, stimulating, and electric with creativity, humor, and sharing. The only thing we could not share was the bottle of fine French wine.

______________

“I came across Steadman Uhlich in a photography forum where both of us participate, and I was impressed with his commitment to helping people. From there, we shared some views, and, when he informed me that he was setting up a place where people could learn and improve, I knew I was going to try it out.

As it happens, that day, I had gone out and tried to make the most of the last of the autumn leaves. I love trees, especially when clad in full colour, but, somehow, have not been able to get any tree shots that make me go “WOW.” Out of maybe 300 such shots accumulated over 2 years shots, not one of trees, even though I love them, and shot them hundreds of times.

Now enter Steadman Uhlich. I told him this “story”, and expressed frustration. He didn’t give me any technical tips. I assume that, as he knew I could handle other types of shots/subjects, he also knew that the problem was more in “what to want to do” than in “what to do” or “how to do it”. So he told me what to want to do.

‘Imagine the tree in its permanence. Things come and go, people come and go, weather comes and goes, seasons come and go, trees remain. Go out and shoot the tree in all its varying conditions.’

Within a couple of minutes, I was totally inspired, having understood why I have up to now failed, and having had my mind opened to avenues that I had not even considered in how to deepen my approach to photography.

This part of the conversation lasted but a few minutes.

My experience as a business consultant as well as a personal development coach tells me that Steadman Uhlich is exactly who he claims, a true mentor.

Like a locksmith who can pick locks and open doors in people’s minds that free up capability, creativity and talent about photography.

Such people are rare, I am priviledged to have found one who will deepen the pleasure and richness of my hobby.

___________

“I just wanted to drop a quick note to relay the experience I had with Steadman Uhlich a couple of days ago. On Sunday, I had the pleasure of meeting Steadman in person and spending over four hours talking (in an onsite, face-to-face Mentoring Session), looking at work I had done and going over a little post processing. The time just flew by.

Steadman opened my eyes to many things including composition, shadows and light. Things I thought I had a grasp on, but no I did not.

He truly showed me a way to look at subjects in a way I have not read in books.

His way of teaching and making me look at myself is relaxed and laid back and very refreshing.

I would encourage anyone interested in bettering their photography skills to take the time and give him a call. You will not be disappointed in the time spent on the phone with Steadman. I am looking forward to our future meetings and learning as much as I can from him.”

“Hi, my name is Jeffrey and I am from the Philippines. I just had a Free call using Skype with Photomentors and talked to Steadman Uhlich about photography and what I want to create.

When I first heard his voice, I was not nervous at all even though speaking in English, since English is my Third language.

The conversation that we had was worth it, all of the things that needed to be discussed were really clear, from voice to details.

I am also new in photography and after the conversation and my readings in the PhotoMentors website pages, I was inspired and have decided to take a journey with Photomentors.

I think this is way better than a photography workshop that I’ve attended because this will become more of a “Mentor and Student” relationship rather than “Teacher and Group of people Relationship”.

I believe Photomentors can change your life in a better way not just in photography, but also in your life as a person, after the call and the readings in the website.

You’ll never know, One Call could Change your life! “

___________

Steady,

I just wanted to take a few minutes to again thank you for all that you’ve done for me.

I originally posted on [photography forum], a project that I was trying to accomplish with my Grand Daughter, utilizing Natural Light, of her playing her guitar by the window. I knew that I wanted to do them in B&W, so I posted my 1st try on [photography forum], in the People Photography forum. I was getting a lot of people looking by no one really taking the time to comment.

I really was looking for help in this area, as I really wasn’t just posting shots, I really wanted to learn & improve my results.

Steady, this is where you came along, you presented me with some positive comments, but at the same time, showed me where improvement could be made, or at least explored. You offered to talk to me, for a few minutes, to further discuss some of your comments.

I must admit, that at the beginning I was somewhat hesitant, as I’m “fairly new” into photography & thought that I might easily be overwhelmed, in our talks. How wrong I was!!!

Steady, you immediately made me feel right at home, no intimidation at all.

We were miles apart, yet I felt like you were right there with me, not talking down to me, but to me & where I maybe didn’t understand what you were saying, or what you meant, you took the time to reword things, explain, maybe in more detail, but using another approach. I found myself, even asking for more & more.

Then we started analyzing the pictures that I had posted.

You started pointing out things to me, especially in the facial area, that I never really saw, they were always there, but what a difference in the eyes of the beholder.

We started discussing the limitations that I had in where I was shooting the pictures (in my daughter’s kitchen, table & chairs pulled off to the side, me shooting out in the hall way). You could have very easily said, “well find another spot”, but you didn’t. You sat down & said, “so let’s see what we can do with what we have”.

Ideas, that you mentioned, about positioning, cropping, trying to get the viewers’ eyes to do some of the work for us, showed me so much in a different perspective.

Can’t thank you enough!!

Thanks again,

“Enabled me to Unlock..”

____________

This was the third time I mentored with Steadman Uhlich, or, more accurately, was mentored by him.

Today my issue was that I had taken a picture which I really liked, posted it on a couple of forums, and, uncharacteristically received, no comment or response whatsoever. So I asked Steady why that might be.

He started by looking at my picture, stating that he saw that it had potential, and asking me what I saw in it. I mentioned the straight stem of the flower, and the sphere adorning it, and the contrast with the sideways leaves, like so many brushstrokes in Oriental style.

He agreed with my “take” on my picture, and said that, if that was the case, why did I not do simple things to make that more immediately visible to the viewer?

He suggested darkening the background. That took me all of 30 seconds, and already made a significant impact. Then he suggested different framing and or cropping, and gave me 4 options. Another 4 or 5 minutes maybe.

Simple, once Steady had suggested it.

He made it feel so obvious, yet nobody else had seen the potential of the picture and enabled me to unlock it.

Thanks, Steady! You and I must do this more often.

On Steadman’s Six Minute Solution

“Hi my name is Jeffrey, I am from Davao, Philippines.

I have heard about this new service from Steadman Uhlich at PhotoMentors called the “Six Minute Solution.” As a mentee from PhotoMentors, Steady and I had a talk via Skype from several photos that we take a look at and some of these photos were quickly fixed and improved with Steadman’s “Six Minute Solution.”

I am totally amazed on how Steady made my snapshot photo look great and that you could even do it with a non professional camera in a short period of time.

He could provide some solution on how to improve your photo quickly, and that includes photos possibly taken from your camera such as; DSLR, point and shoot or even with a Mobile phone camera.

Just imagine how your photo will be quickly fixed or improve with a low cost session from a 10 year professional photographer who had his own art gallery exhibit shop.

Yes, only one photo per call but one photo could make a big difference on how you shoot the next hundreds or thousands of pictures in your life.“

He is a natural with how he approaches the areas where improvement can be made, taking his time to really make sure that you understand the points being made in a very easy-going and friendly dialogue.

His suggestions are efficient and to the point, focusing not only on the specifics of a particular photo, but also,

Insight is the Goal

One of the things I keep in mind when mentoring other people is my goal to make the lesson something that they “own” and understand fully. I want the mentee to understand the reasons and “see” it so clearly that it becomes something they will retain and value. This comes by sharing how I see their images or work and comparing how THEY see the work and THEIR vision. We discuss things. We compare their intent and their preliminary result (such as a raw image).

Then by use of questions the mentee will discover things for themselves. This may then be reinforced by examples and variations.

Choices are discussed.

Options uncovered.

Creativity unlocked.

The result is often an insight for the mentee.

In some cases this takes only a few minutes to “see” and understand a conceptual or visual difference, or to learn a new way of looking at the subject or a new technique.

In many cases this breakthrough can take just a few moments or even seconds!

When that “AHA!” moment occurs, it is stimulating and rewarding for both the mentee and the mentor. This shared discovery moment can be something that helps a photographer or artist break out of a box and make progress in fulfilling THEIR vision.

Steadman’s Method

1. When I teach or mentor or consult with photographers around the world, I use a method I call a Live Voice+Visual Dialog™ on a phone call.

Some people mistakenly think this is just a phone call. It is far from that!

This service is based on both of us sharing a dialog or conversation at the same time as we view your photos together!

We will use BOTH Voice and Visual communication at the same time!

That is not the full story.

You will need to try it to understand and to experience the great difference for yourself!

All communication is by live voice call (a phone call or Skype call).

In short you must call me and speak with me to use this service. No emails. No chat. No PMs. No text messages. No typing. No writing. It is easier and much better this way for many reasons.

_______________

Why does Steadman use Voice calls instead of email or text messages?

Simply because I can tell you many things in a phone call that I will not type and and things I cannot write as effectively.

It is much easier and better and faster as a means of communicating.

It allows us to have a deeper level of communication.

It is more friendly, more natural, and reduces the anxiety or intimidation you might naturally feel when consulting an expert about your photos.

It is more fluid and more immediate in response, so you don’t have to wait and wonder while waiting for an email or text message.

It is a better way of communicating meaning and subtle comments.

It is much more personal and more “human” than email.

It is much more FUN for both you and me!

It is the BEST way to communicate (aside from a real face to face meeting).

You will find much more information about how I communicate with other photographers around the world in many languages!

If you speak English fluently, I can tell you more information and more clearly and more quickly than I can type. I can tell you more because I will have a “Live and Real Time” dialog or conversation with you. The difference between writing and speaking is considerable. You will see and understand on your first call why this is much better than a written comment or critique on a forum.

If English is NOT your first language or if you are concerned about using English because your use of English is NOT fluent or you may feel inhibited in any way from using English, please read down below in this post. I provide help in 18+ languages in addition to English, so I may be able to help you.

Seven ways you can help other photographers and yourself too!

Have you heard of Karma? Do you believe in the Golden Rule?

Karma is the belief that all deeds can shape the past, present, and future experiences. In the West, this is sometimes expressed by the Christian concept of “you reap what you sow.” In short, do good to others and good may come to you. I truly believe that helping others helps not only them, but also ourselves in ways we often cannot anticipate. Each action of good you do, can make the world a nicer place. Do you believe in the Golden Rule?

Ask yourself if the person can make a difference.

Ask yourself if they can help others think more creatively.

_______________

Steadman’s professional success in the art world follows his professional success in the corporate world.

When he was just 36 years old, Steadman was a leading partner for the largest global management consulting firm. At that firm and previously at its largest competitor, he was responsible for initiating and leading direct face-to-face private meetings with the highest levels of corporate management for 129 large global corporations. He was the “Partner in Charge” of Global Profit Improvement Consulting. This position was created for him in order to take advantage of his unique skills and abilities.

He also established global networks of professionals working together in a virtual community.

The people participating in his Global Knowledge Network shared their knowledge to create a greater success for each and the client. It was a breakthrough in collaboration and global thinking. He has a “global” world-view and has studied more than twelve languages with a passion for understanding others from cultures around the world. Steadman has a broad knowledge of many cultures.

Chairmen and CEOs of many of the world’s largest corporations spent hours with him to learn his ideas for ways to increase their profits and improve their businesses.

His work was acclaimed by his clients, CEO contacts, and his partners around the globe. His mentor was the CEO of the firm and the Global Chairmen of both firms singled him out as an innovative role model for the entire partnership of the firm. Prior to that role, he sold millions of dollars of services in the computer industry.

At various times, people who know him have described him as a diplomat, marketing guru, rainmaker, and self-less leader in organizations and in global networks of professionals.

Here are verbatim quotes from testimonial statements from his former partners, including the global Chairman of the largest consulting firm in the world. These highly experienced professionals were usually skeptical of anything new or different.

Steadman brought innovative ideas to the firm and started a change of thinking, transforming how the partners looked at their skills, the needs of their clients, the value of collaboration and knowledge sharing, and the potential for growth of both the firm (business) and the individual.

There were thousands of similar spoken statements that were not captured in writing.

These quotes above were unsolicited and hand written by the visitors to Steadman’s art gallery.

____________

Extraordinary Portraits Can Affect People Emotionally

I consider my greatest achievement as an artist is the unexpected deep emotional response that sometimes occurs when people view some of the portraits I have created. Some of these portraits have a rare ability to touch the viewer’s emotions.

Sixteen people have literally been brought to tears while viewing photographs of people they do not know.

Two of these, wrote that this happened while viewing my works over the internet. Countless others who do know the people in the photos were also moved to tears. But it is those viewers that have no connection at all by family or friend to the person in the portrait image that I find most memorable and remarkable.

“The Greatest Satisfaction I Know as an Artist”

I never expected this to happen. Of course I would be pleased if my clients liked their portraits, or those portraits of members of their family. Countless times, I have received notes and calls and have been told how family members (husbands, mothers, fathers, grandparents) were moved to tears by a portrait I made of someone in their family. I thought that was wonderful.

But something else happened too.

Sixteen total strangers were moved to tears by some of my portraits of people they do not know.

It was not as frequent as seeing family members of my clients or clients themselves cry, it was certainly rare, and it was not expected.

Yet it happened 16 times!

Fourteen times I saw with my own eyes, and two additional times men wrote me to tell me this.

I truly saw it happen 14 times with my own eyes and the response came from both women and men.

Yes, men cried too!

It was when people who viewed a portrait I made were brought to tears by that portrait, yet they do not know the person in the portrait.

Bear in mind, these were not portraits of war victims, drought victims, or people in pain or suffering. They were not destitute, hungry, malnourished, or disfigured. They were portraits of ordinary people, not celebrities, not famous, not even known to the viewer.

When that happened, it changed my life in a profound way.

It gave me an idea or inspiration to follow a different path in my life and completely changed how I see photography and how I will use it in the future.

What caused those people to cry?

It is an extraordinary response to the face of a person they don’t know by prior meeting, but somehow know in their heart.

When I witnessed this response, I was watching the tears stream down their faces, and listening to what the viewers revealed to me.

Some told me things about what caused this response. Sometimes we just shared those emotions in silence, as they were so strong that it was truly a moment where the viewer was speechless. It always touches me deeply too, even to the point where tears filled my own eyes as I witnessed this emotion connection the viewer had with my work.

These have been some of the most unforgettable moments in my life as an artist. They transcend anything material or business related.

As an artist, it gave me the greatest satisfaction to know that my art has reached someone deeply, and to witness that with my own eyes was an unexpected moment of enlightenment. “
