Snapshots Versus Portraits

Not Photogenic?
Consider yourself “not photogenic?”

Have you ever told someone you are “not photogenic?”

What made you feel that way?

Was it because of the way you looked in snapshots or poorly made ‘studio’ portraits or year after year of dismal school photos?

Is it because of how you see yourself in the mirror? You may think that is how others see you. Don’t think that!

Is it because you feel you don’t look like a “cover girl” or a model or an actor or the most popular person at school? Is it because you are not blonde and blue-eyed and thin?

That is how many people feel. After meeting so many people of all ages who felt they are not ‘photogenic’ I have come to the conclusion to start a personal “mission.” My mission is to prove to you that you are indeed photogenic!

You are more photogenic than you know!
I can prove it to you too!

I encourage you to take a simple exercise or test that may seem silly at first, but it really does help. It starts by looking over my portfolio after you read this page. And remember to ask yourself the following questions. It can change your thinking, and that is the first step you need to take!

Here is what you should do:

As you look over my Portfolio of Portraits shown here on this website or on my online Portfolio, you should remember this truth: Almost every one of the people I photograph has told me they don’t feel ‘photogenic’ or they don’t look good in photographs! Consider that for a moment. Think about the portraits you just saw in my website. Did you see people whose portraits stimulated you somehow? Did some look pretty? Did some look handsome? Did some look smart? Did some look sexy? Did some look interesting? Did some look artsy or creative? Did they look ‘photogenic?’ What do you think? Do you think they thought of themselves as photogenic before the photo session?

Here is my motto and something for you to remember: It is not how the ‘camera sees’ you, it is how the photographer or artist sees you! That is the crucial difference that will prove to you that you are indeed photogenic. You just need to find the right photographer or artist. That should be easy now.

You may not believe it until you see it for yourself when I show you your own Unforgettable Portrait&#0153, but I can prove to you that you are photogenic!

Key Points to Remember:

  1. Most people don’t think they are photogenic.

  2. Most people depend on poorly made photographs to show how the look.

  3. People photographed by Steadman are usually amazed and WOWed by the results.

  4. People photographed by Steadman often have their own self-esteem boosted when they see how ‘photogenic’ they can be.

Here is my personal motto and I hope you will consider it very carefully:

It is not how the ‘camera sees’ you!

It is how the photographer or artist sees you!

That is the crucial difference. Remember this!

Here are my two strong suggestions or “rules”:

1. Don’t judge yourself by how you look in snapshots!

2. Don’t judge yourself by how you look in poorly made professional ‘studio’ portraits either!

Will it really work for you too? We can only find out by trying. That is all it takes. If you try you might find another way of looking at yourself that will make a difference in how you feel about yourself for a lifetime! Imagine that for a moment. A lifetime of feeling good about yourself!

In my honest opinion, this is one of the very best things you can buy for yourself and do for yourself.

It can really make a positive difference in how you see yourself!

I have ‘helped’ many people see themselves in a new light.

This has literally brought tears to the eyes of my clients and the people that love them and even strangers. I have had so many hugs and kisses from people who were thrilled by their “real” portrait that I know how this affects my clients. Parents have told me how it made a “huge difference” in how their teenagers felt about themselves. Adults have said so many touching things about how they feel about their own portraits that I get choked up reading their letters. It is a humbling experience for me. The truth is: it happens all the time in my work.

Still not convinced you are photogenic? Have some doubts? Have some fears something about you will somehow not look good in a photo or portrait? Read the Next Page before you give reach that conclusion.

You really are photogenic!

My honest belief and motto: It is not how the ‘camera sees’ you, it is how the photographer or artist sees you!

If you don’t think you are ‘photogenic,’ it is simply because you have not met the right photographer yet!

That is the crucial difference that will prove to you that you are indeed photogenic.

You just need to find the right photographer or artist to “see” the “you” and what makes you distinctive and interesting.

Still not convinced you are photogenic? Have some doubts? Have some fears something about you will somehow not look good in a photo or portrait? I want to assure you that you can have an Unforgettable Portrait&#0153 regardless of what you may fear makes you “not photogenic” such as: age, acne, scars, blemishes, weight, double chins, weak chin, wrinkles, age spots, stained teeth, crooked teeth, gaps in your teeth, missing teeth, no teeth, bald spots, grey hair, very thin hair, no hair, cancer recovery (undergoing chemo), bags under your eyes, uneven sized eyes, prominent ears, soft jaw line, crooked nose, hooked nose, jutting jaws, pointed chin, turkey neck, loose skin, dark eyes, lazy eyes, squinty eyes, thick glasses, pot belly, tattoos, confinement to a wheelchair, missing limbs, or anything else you can imagine.

If you feel any of the above apply to you, then you really should contact me so I can prove to you that you really can be photogenic and have a portrait that will overcome any of the above things many people consider “weaknesses” or “flaws.” Look at my portfolio and you will see many examples where those same “fears and flaws” were overcome with marvelous results. Read this Quote.

You may think this is hype. It is not. It is a confident statement based on my years of experience in helping many others just like you overcome their fear of seeing themselves in a photograph. I can help you. I really can. I only write this with the utmost sincerity.

Don’t be trapped for a life-time with a poor self-image. Call me now and let’s get started! It is really fun!

Snapshot Versus Portrait by Steadman Uhlich

One of the most fulfilling parts of my career in photography is to create an outstanding portrait for someone who has always felt they were not ‘photogenic.’ Who hasn’t winced when they saw a snapshot or typical photo taken of themselves. Who among us has an engaging or flattering driver’s license photo? So what is the problem? Are we all doomed to have photos that we dread seeing?

  • Are all of the photos of you hidden?

  • How will you be remembered? Will it be by snapshots that you never liked. Will it be by “Cookie Cutter” or typical studio portraits?

  • How will your future generations see you?

It is only natural that most people in society are concerned about how we look to others. But the image we have in our own minds may be caused by poor lighting, poor angles, poor exposures, and poor photographs taken by unskilled photographers whether they call themselves ‘amateurs’ or ‘professionals.’

In the following Photo Comparisons you will see what I call “Snapshots vs. Portraits.” This is dramatic proof that you can have a portrait that can “change your life.” That is what my clients so often tell me. It changes how they see themselves!

The amazing ‘transformations’ are actually done without adding any makeup. There is no typical ‘makeover.’ No hair stylist or makeup artist was used. These are not paid or unpaid models. These are not ‘professional models’ either. They are all clients. The photos you see (for each person) were usually taken mere minutes from each other in time. In most cases only 5 – 15 minutes can make a big difference. In one extraordinary case, only one (1) minute made a dramatic difference. Both photos (both the snapshot and the portrait) were taken with the same camera, same lens, same person, same makeup (if any was worn), and yes, the same photographer too!

The difference you see in these photo comparisons is not due to computer gimmicks, added makeup or makeovers. It is a result of my way of working with people to come up with a portrait that they can be proud to have, show, and share with others. Many claim it is the ‘portrait of a lifetime.’

You may think this is too much to read. Don’t stop yet.

This one section of this website is perhaps one of the most important for you to see (and read) if you are seriously considering having a portrait made of yourself or someone you love. It may change how you see yourself!

Here is the reason you should consider this seriously: The people you see in these snapshots were used to seeing themselves as they appear in the typical snapshot. We all have snapshots. For some of us that is all we have. That and a few old ‘school photos.’ After high school, few of us ever get a professionally made portrait made of ourselves. We may be photographed at work (‘for the company newsletter’) or at a church or organization (‘for the directory’). But few people think they could ever have a portrait that really separates them from the crowd. Very few people ever get a portrait that stands out of the crowd of typical ‘studio’ portraits.

Few people would think they could be “Art” that would be admired by thousands of strangers…not just their family. Yet, that is what can happen.

Remember this: You don’t have to be remembered by a poor image or poor snapshot or poor ‘studio’ photograph.

Instead, you too can have an Unforgettable PortraitTM! My clients will tell you, it is a great ‘relief’ to finally get a portrait that reflects their true beauty (man or woman) and something of their unique character. For some clients it is truly an eye-opening experience that transforms their own self-image.

All of the photos (both snapshots and portraits) are used here with the written permission of my clients. My clients saw the dramatic difference and were very happy. They say “WOW” when they see their finished portrait. For some, the portrait actually brought tears to their eyes. Each of my clients gains a portrait that shows some aspect (sometimes hidden from even family members) of themselves. That is what I can do for you too.

Verbatim Testimonials from Steadman Uhlich’s Portrait Clients

The following are a few verbatim quotes from written notes and letters sent to Steadman Uhlich by his portrait clients.

“Thank you for one of the most memorable experiences of my life.”

“Your gift lies not only with the lens but your ability to see and feel the inner and outer beauty, to appreciate and respect the uniqueness of your subject and then able to project it on film, a fantastic talent.”

“There are many people who claim to do portraits, or be photographers…but what you end up with is what you pay for: portraits that are blank, have no uniqueness, and bleak expressions or unnatural faces that make you look awkward and odd.

Well, we have a best-kept secret right here in Alabama and his name is Steadman Uhlich. If you want a portrait that will literally take the breath away of anyone who walks in your home and sees it, Steadman does it.

If you want a portrait that will be a timeless piece of artwork for generations to come…you want Steadman. He works with you and is tireless in achieving a work of art that is YOU.”

“You created a timeless, unforgettable work of art.”

“Unforgettable, fantastic experience.”

“Thank you for making one of my dreams a reality.”

“Perfect experience”

“It looks better than any painted portrait could.”

“The way you did the subject makes it a real work of art.”

“I just knew I could trust you.”

“What a wonderful experience!”

“Unbelievably beautiful pictures, I was just shocked. I am not easily impressed. I work in the arts every day and am accustomed to seeing beautiful things. But when I saw how beautifully (the portrait) was crafted, I was literally moved to tears. Incredible!”

“I am a hundred times more pleased with this portfolio than I am with either the oil portrait (by another artist) or the prints from other photographers.

“It’s difficult to describe in words, but rather than just a picture of their faces printed on photo paper, you were able to capture expressions from them that somehow reach “deeper” to pull out some of their personalities.”

“The whole photo session was phenomenal.”

“Your work exceeded my expectations. Everyone who has seen them is amazed to say the least.”

“When (we) viewed the (portraits) for the first time, (husband) broke down into tears. (It is) impactful; it touches everyone.”

“Each photo is like a piece of priceless art. It is a gift that will keep on giving.”

“You are amazing! I love it. Words cannot express how much I appreciate your artistic eye and your making us feel at home in your studio…I am even more thrilled to have my family featured in your amazing works of art.”

“Your work is breathtaking. You found the perfect picture in us. Our personalities showed up so comfortably in your work…my sincerest gratitude for giving my son and I something we can share over several lifetimes.”

“I am amazed he was able to capture the images he did, with what little time and light we had that day. Steadman Uhlich is a truly inspiring artist and photographer who touched our lives in ways that words and photographs cannot express. Thank you Steadman for giving so freely of your time, talent and expertise. Anyone who wants photos of themselves should CALL STEADMAN UHLICH!!!! He is a standout talent in an industry flooded with imitators. Awesome and incredible!!!”

“The portrait is a masterpiece that I will treasure each and every day. I could have searched high and low and never found a gift that will bring my family more pleasure than this beautiful picture in time of (my daughter).”

“When I first came into your Art Gallery I was feeling nervous and apprehensive. I have never really seen myself as being a particularly attractive or photogenic person and I was worried…I mistakenly thought I was going to have my photograph taken by a professional photographer when in fact I had my Portrait made by a very talented and gifted artist who made me look upon myself in a new and more positive way. I absolutely love my portrait. You managed to make me look several years younger and display a sophistication I never knew I had. I keep looking at it and wondering how you managed to capture the “me inside.”

“The portrait of (my daughter) was everything you promised and more.

You really did capture the passion, excitement, and the emotion that is so much of her personality. It just shines through in the work!”

“It is absolutely stunning…it is one of a kind”

“He’s energetic, fun, and will create something you won’t find anywhere else.”

“You captured that moment in the most beautiful photograph I have ever seen. This photograph allows me to call that feeling up every time I see it. What a precious gift, to know that feeling every day! Among my possessions, I treasure it the most, not only because of the powerful emotion it conveys or the beautiful art that it is…”

“As with almost every area of life, something this good comes at a cost, but I can honestly say that these portraits are very well worth the investment. The cost indeed seems small compared to the satisfaction we receive in enjoying many timeless expressions of our childrens’ personalities.”

“You will never know how special you made me feel that day (during the session). I am always so negative about myself and for one afternoon I felt so special and even a little pretty like a kid again.”

“I view the portraits often. Each individual photo triggers a mood ring of emotions.”

“The photo shoot was an experience of professionalism and promise.”

“Each child feels so special and loves the way they look.”

“The end result truly reflects each person’s individual style beautifully.”

“These pictures are real treasures.”

A daughter writes about her 81 years young mother’s session:

“The photos of my mother; well what can I say; they are wonderful. They capture so much of what I love of my mother. Her charm, her humor, that impish personality.”

“What truly amazes me is that in looking at Mother through your eyes I see new things about her that have never occurred to me. I can see the essence of her as a woman.”

“My mother had the time of her life yesterday. The time in your studio was all about her and she loved it. Her eyes in the portrait show that she recaptured her youth for a moment.”

Extraordinary Portraits Can Affect People Emotionally

I consider my greatest achievement as an artist is the unexpected deep emotional response that sometimes occurs when people view some of the portraits I have created. Some of these portraits have a rare ability to touch the viewer’s emotions.

Sixteen people have literally been brought to tears while viewing photographs of people they do not know.

Two of these, wrote that this happened while viewing my works over the internet. Countless others who do know the people in the photos were also moved to tears. But it is those viewers that have no connection at all by family or friend to the person in the portrait image that I find most memorable and remarkable.

“The Greatest Satisfaction I Know as an Artist”

I never expected this to happen. Of course I would be pleased if my clients liked their portraits, or those portraits of members of their family. Countless times, I have received notes and calls and have been told how family members (husbands, mothers, fathers, grandparents) were moved to tears by a portrait I made of someone in their family. I thought that was wonderful.

But something else happened too.

Sixteen total strangers were moved to tears by some of my portraits of people they do not know.

It was not as frequent as seeing family members of my clients or clients themselves cry, it was certainly rare, and it was not expected.

Yet it happened 16 times!

Fourteen times I saw with my own eyes, and two additional times men wrote me to tell me this.

I truly saw it happen 14 times with my own eyes and the response came from both women and men.

Yes, men cried too!

It was when people who viewed a portrait I made were brought to tears by that portrait, yet they do not know the person in the portrait.

Bear in mind, these were not portraits of war victims, drought victims, or people in pain or suffering. They were not destitute, hungry, malnourished, or disfigured. They were portraits of ordinary people, not celebrities, not famous, not even known to the viewer.

When that happened, it changed my life in a profound way.

It gave me an idea or inspiration to follow a different path in my life and completely changed how I see photography and how I will use it in the future.

What caused those people to cry?

It is an extraordinary response to the face of a person they don’t know by prior meeting, but somehow know in their heart.

When I witnessed this response, I was watching the tears stream down their faces, and listening to what the viewers revealed to me.

Some told me things about what caused this response. Sometimes we just shared those emotions in silence, as they were so strong that it was truly a moment where the viewer was speechless. It always touches me deeply too, even to the point where tears filled my own eyes as I witnessed this emotion connection the viewer had with my work.

These have been some of the most unforgettable moments in my life as an artist. They transcend anything material or business related.

As an artist, it gave me the greatest satisfaction to know that my art has reached someone deeply, and to witness that with my own eyes was an unexpected moment of enlightenment. “
