Testimonials About Steadman Uhlich Equestrian Project

Verbatim Testimonial Letter from a Professional Equestrian: Mark Lyon

Source: Mark Lyon is a Champion Equestrian, Full-Time Horse Trainer, Exhibitor, and Coach.  He has a unique sense of the horses, his training skill with horses is “amazing” and he has an infectious smile along with a distinctive style. He is a true “horseman” and an authentic “buckaroo.”

“I recently met and got a chance to work with Steadman. I saw what he had done for another professional horse trainer I respect and I could see Steadman had the skill and talent to make some very high quality and creative photos that would add value to my website and my business marketing as a professional horseman.

At our first consultation he told me that many of his best and favorite photos were not shown on his website.  I thought “Sure” with a bit of cowboy skepticism.  Then I saw his large portfolio loaded with his large photo prints and I immediately saw  what he meant.  He was right, many of the photos that he has in his print portfolio that are reserved for private viewing and later publication are really amazing and so unusual and creative that they must be seen to be believed.  In fact, my favorite photo of the other trainer is not on his website or Steadman’s, and my own favorite photo of me is also not going to be shown on either Steadman’s site or my own site until his book is published in the future.  But, I can wait for that time to come when I can put them on my site.   In the meantime, I have other photos from Steadman that I can use online that are also outstanding and are already getting my clients, my students, my prospects, my friends, and my professional peers to say “WOW.”

The photographs Steadman made for me are fantastic!

I am very glad I made the decision to participate in Steadman’s equestrian project and I recommend other horsemen and equestrians do the same. I know you won’t believe the photos he can make of you, till you see them yourself.

He surprised my friends and he surprised me and my wife, with his artistic vision of us as equestrians.

I was very impressed with the quality of photos I saw him make, as they were so good I couldn’t believe they were of me and my horse…

The photos Steadman made look like they belong in a high-end art gallery, the clarity and depth and creativity of each one seemed to make the subject jump to life!!

As a professional horseman I have seen lots of horse photos both at shows and in professional magazines and none of those compared to what I saw Steadman make. Period!

Steadman’s use of light, creativity, artistic “eye” and knowledge of the subject made the ordinary become extraordinary!!

He took time to get to know and understand me. He even studied my traditional style, my gear, my business needs, and my personal taste. He has an eye for the details that matter to me and he is committed to not only making creative portraits, but also committed to authenticity.  That was important to me too.

Then he was able to catch my personality on film and it was like I was looking at me captured in a moment in time always in the perfect angle, looking at the picture, something seemed to draw you in.  It was also like being transported back in time, it was so lifelike.

I thought the photos Steadman made of me were incredible. They are art and they really do make people, including other equestrians, say “WOW” when they see them.

My partner Miranda and I often work with green horses, colts, problem horses, and even wild Mustangs.  It would be an understatement to say that Mustangs are not commonly considered the prettiest of horses by most horse owners. Steadman sees something different in each horse and has made some amazing photos of our Mustangs while we are training them. Steadman captured our Mustangs’ raw energy and wild spirit even as we are in the process of breaking and training them.  He also made these amazing photos without using any flash and in very challenging conditions for photography.  I know something about photography, and it was impressive to see the results of his creativity and work.

As a professional horse and rider trainer, the quality and creativeness of these photos are invaluable to me as it is so important to get my personality across to my prospective customers. His photos of me and my wife and partner, Miranda,  had that “WOW factor” that will catch the attention of our intended audience and market.

Steadman prepared us for the photo session with tips and advice on all kinds of things that would make for better photos of us.

Steadman’s photos really captured the spirit and energy of the horses.

His use of natural light made the photos grab your eye and his knowledge of the subject made taking photos so easy.  He was also very flexible and easy to work with.

He really understood what I was looking for in different photos and had some great ideas to get that look that set his photos apart from what I was used to seeing.”

“Steadman went to work on what he had envisioned in his mind.  While not knowing me personally, somehow he was able to capture me, the real me.

Anyone who views this image, views a story.  I see the story of my life in these pictures because it is a true reflection of who I am.  Thank you, Steadman.

When Steadman showed us the portraits, we all got extremely quiet.  We all sat around the table and just could not believe how wonderful the pictures looked.

I would dare anyone to have a portrait done by Steadman and not use the word WOW to describe their initial thoughts.”

“Why Steadman? Why this photographer as opposed to many other people behind a camera who have an eye for setting up a shot? That is exactly what I asked myself when my friends began raving about a new photographer in town, a guy who was traveling to equine events and taking pictures for some project.
I am a lifelong horsewoman who also has an interest in art, and am not easily impressed.  I glanced with a jaded eye at some of the postings on Facebook and had to admit, there was something going on here. Even so, I did not look further.

While attending a clinic given by master horseman, Peter Campbell, this photographer gentleman shows up and unveils a portrait he had taken of a young woman on a horse. I have seen arguably 1000’s of portraits of young women on horses.

This particular one took my breath away. There was something about the way Steadman captured the movement and grace of the horse, the matching fire and beauty that they shared that created a true picture of their unique relationship.

That is what makes the difference. Many people can take really nice pictures of horses and people. There is skill involved as neither are easy subjects.

Across the fine line of  “enjoyable” and “memorable” is the ability to capture a time in space moment that presents an under the skin feel of both the personality of the person, the horse and what they have going on between them at that very and exact moment.

I have since viewed many of Steadman’s portraits and they all to a one share that gift, the ability to see beneath clothes, hair styles, cosmetics or the lack of, to the soul of the human being and the certain joy we horse people have in our interaction with our horses.

Even when the moments reflect strife or conflict as in the rodeo shots, there is still a high passion for life that can only be shared by the photographer in order to be so truly reflected in the consistency of his work.

I am honored to have been a subject of Steadman’s and am looking forward to being in front of that lens again, as many times as he will have me!”

Verbatim Testimonial Letter from an English Style Equestrian: Jamie Haith

Source: Jamie is a serious English style equestrian. She trains Thoroughbreds that are former race horses as hunter-jumpers.  She has four horses in training now.

“I met Steadman through the stable where I keep my horses.  He was visiting our area and because I had never heard of him before, I was at first skeptical of hiring a photographer who did not have a local reputation.  That was until I saw his work.  When I did visit his website, when I looked over his portfolio, and when I saw the great photos he made of people I know, my attitude changed and I decided I wanted him to photograph me and my horse. I have been riding horses seriously for 12 years.  I consider myself a hunter-jumper. I have competed for several years.  I also train Thoroughbreds for hunter-jumper competition and own four Thoroughbreds at this time.  I was very impressed by the portraits and action photos Steadman made of three of the professional trainers I know.  Those trainers and other riders raved about his work too.   I chose to have Steadman photograph me in a private session.  I told him I did not want a typical “posed” portrait and I also wanted a photo showing me riding.

Because my horse was acting a bit temperamental the day of my photo session, I was concerned that the photos would not be as good as I wanted.  Steadman assured me it would be no problem for him and he was confident that he could make some special photos for me.   I was totally surprised later when I saw the impressive photographs Steadman had made.

In a word, Steadman’s photographs are “awesome.”

I was amazed that Steadman was able to show my horse looking so beautiful and strong.  He is a handsome horse, but I have never seen a photo of him look this good.  It is art. Some of the photos look so much like a classic painting that I was amazed and proud that it was my horse in the picture.

Steadman showed me the many action shots from the session and I was again amazed.  There were so many wonderful pictures.

He knows what to look for in the horse’s action and he caught it in shot after shot.  Not only that, he also pays close attention to how the rider looks too.   He asked me to tell him my favorites and I just kept saying “that one, and that one, and that one.”  There were dozens of fantastic action photos that each showed my horse looking great.  I was stunned by the quality and by what Steadman had seen with his eyes and captured with his camera.  I kept saying “awesome” and I mean it!

These photos are so exciting to see and they are really impressive and stunning when you see them in large prints. I had viewed Steadman’s website prior to our photo session, but I was not expecting the real photographs to be as impressive and powerful as they are.  You really need to see them in the large prints to understand this.  I know it changed my feelings immediately, and now I can totally understand why his clients rave about his work.

When Steadman showed me his large portfolio prints that he made from our session together, I immediately thought “awesome!”  Each time he showed me another print I was “WOWed” again!

Photo after photo was better than any I have seen before and each one looked like art to me.  These are so different from ordinary event or competition photos.  Since I have been riding for several years, I have had many photos made of my horses and me riding them in competitions.  Nothing I have compares to these portraits and action photos by Steadman.  Steadman’s work is elegant and beautiful and art.

When my mother saw the large photos of me, she was also “wowed” too.  My mother has been around horses all her life too and she was totally impressed by these photos.

Steadman’s work is the best I have seen!  It doesn’t look like any of the photos I have seen before.  It looks like it belongs in an art gallery or art museum.  Seriously!

Steadman told me prior to our session that many of his best and favorite photographs are never shown on the internet or his websites.  In fact, several of my favorites are shown on his website, but my favorite shot is not.  It is true when Steadman tells you that some of his best are only seen in private viewings or when you meet him.  My mother and I are both looking forward to seeing Steadman’s art exhibit or book in the future.

I know that I am very happy with these photos now, but I also know that in the future these will become something I will proudly share with my own family.  Steadman’s photographs really are heirloom quality portraits and art.

I am a very serious equestrian. I am also very picky when it comes to things for my horses and when choosing things for myself.  I look for the best quality for my horses and myself.

I can highly recommend Steadman Uhlich to you because I have seen with my own eyes how he can make fantastic art with anyone and with horses.  You might not think he can do it with you or your horse. I have total confidence he can.  I have seen the results for myself and for several other equestrians I know.  We are all happy we made the choice to have Steadman make his art for us.

After seeing these wonderful photos of one of my horses, I am excited about what Steadman can make for me in the future too.  I intend to have him photograph my other horses too. It is a special experience to have a true artist make art with you as the subject of the art. It is also exciting to be part of his Equestrians Project.

Choose Steadman Uhlich to make your portrait.  You won’t regret it.”

Verbatim Testimonial Letter from an Equestrian: Michele Tetreault-Mertes

Source: Michele is a serious rider who is studying dressage

“Steadman has the ability to uncover your soul and transplant it onto canvas. Steadman Uhlich has returned equestrian art and portraits to its classical roots with a highly refined sense of style and art.

Initially, seeing Steadman’s unforgettable style in portraits of fellow equestrians, I was overcome with emotion and compelled to commission Uhlich’s work. I was drawn in. I wanted Steadman to capture the same portrait effect for my horse and me.

I am European and have lived in Europe as well. Steadman’s work is reminiscent of old world charm, that of which is not commonly seen in the U.S. Additionally, my home is almost 100 years old and furnished with antiques from Europe.

I wanted a portrait that I could feel comfortable displaying in my home as quality and style are important to me. I did not want a typical event photo from a horse show, as those so often look like snapshots.  I wanted something better and something beautiful for my home.  I wanted art, if possible.

I am so pleased with the portraits Steadman has made for me. There is a classic and timeless quality in his portraits that I know will look good even with high-end interiors.

Steadman’s finished portraits look better than painted portraits and equestrian art I have seen. They are engaging and facinating, especially in how they look when seen in a large print.

I cannot let time slip by without telling you what a wonderful experience I had! Steadman was very professional, knowledgeable, interesting, lots of fun, and lovely to spend the time with. Steadman made the experience come alive for me. I felt that my portraits became a deliberate and conscious striving to revive antiquity – Steadman was able to partner with me on my vision and enabled it to become a reality.

It has been years since I had a professional portrait made of me. I know that my friends and I tend to be very critical of how we look in photos and I have some friends who have been disappointed after hiring a professional photographer because there were so few good photos. We tend to be very picky!  Well I was surprised when I saw the results of the photo session I had with Steadman. There were so many beautiful photos that were truly extraordinary in their look that I had a very difficult time choosing from them.

With Steadman, it is not a question of whether there will be a good photo from the session. There is more likely to be a unique challenge to choose from among the many beautiful images he makes of you.

Steadman really pays attention to the details when working with you. Steadman set my horse and I up for success by helping me with tips on how to look my best for the photo shoot. But he goes beyond that, as Steadman carefully looks for the very best angle and light for the rider as well as the horse. It shows in his photographs.

I know some of my friends say I look younger and athletic in some of the photos. I was amazed at how these portraits look. Steadman understands the importance of movement in terms of expression as he has spent a great deal of time observing and studying the matter. He discussed the importance of putting weight on one leg vs. the other in pictures, placement of face, and other various positioning of the body.

As a serious rider, and a student of dressage, I had dreamed of having a photo that would show my love for horses, but I also wanted one to show me looking good too. I have seen many photos by other photographers that show the horse looking good, but the rider looks strange, or sometimes with an odd facial expression when riding. I wanted both of us to look good. That is one reason I chose Steadman Uhlich to make my portrait, as I had seen how attractive his other clients look in the portraits he made of them while they rode.

Steadman works very closely with you to find out what you want people to see in a photo of you. He took the time to understand what I wanted to see in my portrait. Then he surprised me and surpassed by highest expectations!

Steadman has the unique vision of a true artist and is able to see the potential in you and he was sensitive to my desires.

I took the time to look through his portfolios prior to our session and I had seen his portraits of other equestrians I know. So, I expected something of the same and hoped my own portraits would be as good.

I know that for some of his portraits of me, I was completely surprised by how beautiful my horse and I looked in the moment Steadman created.

Steadman doesn’t just copy others or create “cookie-cutter” portraits, like so many photographers do. Steadman really takes the time to create something unique for his clients.

And, as others before me have already said, there are so many beautiful photos in Steadman’s equestrian portfolio that are not seen here on his website.  There are countless photos that each have something beautiful and amazing in them and his action portraits of all kinds of riders are incredible.  I was truly stunned when I saw what he had made for me and others.   Like others, I can’t wait to see his art exhibition and his future book.

Steadman’s portraits of me look unlike anything in his portfolio (prior to his making them of me) and more importantly unlike anything I have seen before by any other photographer. In fact, I was constantly thinking how Steadman’s work looks like something from one of the museums I visited in Europe.

Steadman’s work definitely has a distinctive style and atmosphere that is Art. These are the highest quality contemporary equestrian portraits I have ever seen!

There are always things we want and yet we usually feel a little guilty of spending more than usual on something for ourselves. Let me tell you, whatever you spend on a portrait by Steadman Uhlich is well worth it. It has to be one of the best things I have ever spent money on, because I am so pleased by the resulting portrait.

It is something I will treasure and keep for the rest of my life and I can only say that about a few things that are important to me. People call things like this “priceless” and I know what they mean. Steadman calls his work “unforgettable portraits” and now I fully understand what he means. These are really unforgettable pictures and ones I will keep a lifetime and be happy to share with my friends or family.

Steadman looks for unusual angles and is a master of using natural light.  He sees the distinct plays of shadows and light.  He really sees the light. The results are heavenly.

When I saw his photograph of my horse running at liberty one night, I said “WOW” as I just did not anticipate the photo would look that good from such a dark arena.  It was amazing to see what Steadman saw and my horse looks so beautiful in the photo.  I am totally pleased and pleasantly surprised.

Steadman has surpassed my expectations (I have discriminating taste because to me, most portrait photography seems so commonplace). Again, once seeing Steadman’s work, I became aware that his work harkens back to a by-gone era. Steadman’s development of techniques and artistic sensibilities have created what I consider masterpieces. Steadman is a true artist and craftsman of the highest order.

There is always a challenge in making an accurate representation of two subjects in a photograph. I am overjoyed that Steadman captured the harmony and relationship between myself and my horse.

I can highly recommend Steadman Uhlich to any equestrian of any level or any riding discipline.”

The Professional Dressage Trainer

Here is a set of four portraits I created for professional horse trainer Melissa Piennett.  She specializes in English, Dressage, and Hunter-Jumper training.  Three of the portraits are of her and her horse (a very handsome Westfalen or Westphalian Warmblood).  The fourth image (upper right) is one of my Action Portraits of a horse Melissa has trained, “Windsor” another tall warmblood jumping in this shot.  Windsor is a winner.

Equestrian Portraits by Steadman Uhlich - The Dressage Trainer

Verbatim Testimonial Letter from a Professional Equestrian: Melissa Piennett

Source: Melissa is a serious rider and a professional coach/trainer who teaches dressage and jumping.

“I am a professional horse trainer, specializing in both the dressage and hunter/jumper disciplines. I have been showing and training horses for many years and I am always looking for good photographs of my horses and the horses I have trained.

When we met to look at Steadman’s work of a horse I am training, Windsor, I was amazed at how beautiful the pictures were.

The use of natural light, the way he captured an expression on Windsor’s face I had never seen before, the look on the rider’s face, all of these made the picture truly unlike anything I had ever seen.

In addition, by the time Steadman had cropped it and changed the color to his signature gold tone, the large photo I purchased actually looked as if the horse was jumping out of the wall towards the viewer.

I have been buying pictures of my horses jumping at shows for at least 30 years and have never seen a photograph anything like this. One of my friends said it looked like it belonged in a magazine because the quality was so great.

So I received the prints of Windsor’s portrait, and they so much exceeded my expectations that I hired Steadman to make a portrait of my own dressage horse, Don Camillo.

The first thing Steadman did was to have a meeting with me to discuss what I wanted to see in a portrait of my horse. He listened to me and let me tell him what I was looking for in a portrait of a dressage horse (or a jumper). He explained to me what he looks for in a great portrait, how he uses natural light, and how he sets things up so he has the best chance of getting good photographs. He also told me what to expect on the day of our session, what clothes would probably look best, what I might want to consider in terms of grooming the horse, what tack I might want to use, and what time of day and location we might want for our session.

I admit I was worried about being able to get any usable photographs of either myself or the horse. My horse Don is nearly black and it seems that in every picture taken of him at horse shows he looks like a dark horse-shaped space in the center of the photograph.  In the few show photographs I have seen that looked good of him, there always seems to be some problem with the way I look.

The portrait session itself was remarkably easy, and took only about an hour. I trailered Don to a local barn so that we would have a nice background for the pictures. In addition to the shots we had planned, Steadman took several action shots in an arena of us trotting and cantering. He also took pictures of me alone, and several of me on the ground holding the horse. Throughout the session he gave me directions on what he wanted and made suggestions that ended up creating some of the best portraits.

We met a couple of days later to review the pictures Steadman had taken and to select which one I would get printed.

I was blown away by both the quantity and the quality of the pictures.

The amount of detail, the use of light, the expression of the horse, just everything combined, makes this look like a portrait I would look for in a museum, not a house.

There were 15 other photographs I thought were also exceptionally beautiful.

I am very happy with the portrait I selected. It shows my horse as he looks to me, at his most beautiful. The light on his coat, in his eye, the muscling on his neck, the entire picture looks more like a painting than a photograph.

Some of the other portraits he took of me and the horse together, some of the close ups of Don’s head, and a few of the action shots are so beautiful that I literally can’t stop thinking about them.

I am confident that if you hire Steadman to make a portrait of your horse you will be very happy with the result. I am also confident that you will be, as I was, surprised by something new and beautiful in the horse and maybe in yourself, something you had never seen before.

Steadman is a true artist. As an artist he is able to stand as one outside of your life, apart from it, and find in you and your horse an image of beauty, and truth, that you would, without him, be unable to see.”

Horses at Liberty

Horses can look very different when viewed running at liberty or free from any restraints (i.e. without a saddle, bridle, or rider).  It is fascinating to watch them kick up their hooves and take off in a fast run having fun. For some of my clients, these are their favorite photos of their horse showing their spirit, form and beauty.  If you have an interest in a portrait of your horse running naturally, we can make it happen.

Legacy Portraits

There comes a time in the life of a horsewoman or horseman when they would like to pass on their love for their sport or simply their love of horses.  I saw this when a young girl came across country to visit her grandmother who drives her horse and cart.  I watched as the girl was introduced to the horse, shown how to drive, and finally given the reins for some turns around the arena.  It was a beautiful natural moment to see, as one shows and shares their love with a child they love. The natural light was just right for this one. No artificial light (i.e. no flash) was used and these equestrians were at this moment actually driving their horse past me (in motion) at a nice trot.  Their expressions are completely natural (not posed) as they enjoyed the ride.  This image is very light in tone, so if you have difficulty seeing the subtle tones (shades of color) on this image, it may be that your monitor or computer contrast is too high.

If you would like to have a Legacy Portrait of your own, I can make one for you that reflects your love for your family and your passion for horses.

Equestrian Portrait by Steadman Uhlich - Dream of Driving

Verbatim Testimonial Letter from an Equestrian: Debby Wiseman

Source: Debby is the proud owner of a Haflinger imported from Austria.  She and her granddaughter were photographed as they were driving by at a trot (see above photo).

“Having grown up riding, driving and showing horses as a young girl,  it is a thrill that my granddaughter shares my love of horses. Since she lives in another state, our time together is precious and  almost always involves learning something new with our  equine  friends. A day spent together is a memory to treasure.Teaching my granddaughter to drive my horse was a special day for  both of us.  We had not planned on being photographed.

Steadman  captured us on film, as we trotted around the arena—-no posing, no  studio lights, no special clothes.  A truly authentic moment.

When I saw the photograph that Steadman had taken, I could not  believe my eyes.  I saw myself as a young girl, wanting to learn  everything I could about horses; wanting to be like the person who  was teaching me.

The photo looks almost surreal in the softness of the light (which  was totally natural) as one generation passes her passion on to one  following in her footsteps.

It is not just a photograph; it is fine  art.  It is not just a picture. It tells the story of the closeness  between a grandmother and granddaughter and the joy they have of  being together.

Thanks to Steadman and his beautiful photography, this is a memory  that will not fade…..a treasure that will be enjoyed by our family  for generations to come.Thank you, Steadman.  I can’t wait for you to photograph my beautiful  Haflinger.”

Equestrian Action Portrait by Steadman Uhlich - Bridge of Confidence

Here trainer Kelli Paulson demonstrates the technique needed to cross an abstract obstacle.  In this case it is a narrow metal bridge.  I call this the “Bridge of Confidence” because it requires the horse to have the confidence to step up and cross an object they may have never seen before.  Surprisingly, this simple abstract obstacle causes more than a few horses to balk at crossing it.  Learning how to guide the horse across is a good skill to learn and increases the confidence of both the horse and rider.

Verbatim Testimonial Letter from a Professional Equestrian

Kelli Paulson is a highly regarded and widely admired professional equestrian, and a Purina Regional Ambassador who hosts Trail Rider Challenge events around the Midwest. She invited me to attend one of her TRC outdoor trail events to see how Trail Riders work with their horses. It was a fascinating day as I watched many riders encounter challenging obstacles and practical tests of horsemanship.

“Steadman Uhlich recently attended one of my Trail Rider Challenge events, where he photographed many of the contestants completing trail obstacles. Steadman asked if he could shadow me on the course while observing and photographing the contestants. I agreed, because I had seen some of the creative portraits and action photography that Steadman had made of other trainers and riders.

I have had other photographers photograph our events before, and I have been photographed several times too.

When I saw the photos, I was amazed by Steadman’s finished Action Portraits. He captured the contestants in a way I had not seen before. His photos made everyone from beginner to experienced look like a million bucks. He captured the heart, soul and passion of the horses and riders.

These photos are the most artistic and expressive equestrian photos I have ever seen… “WOW.”

The photos are art gallery and museum quality! If I saw them in a gallery, even if I didn’t know the rider, I would want to buy several. The amazing thing is, I am in some of them. I never knew I could look like that! For the record, I have an art degree and have done lots of photography…and I am impressed!

I have been riding horses for 36 years. My first training job was 21 years ago. I have been a full time professional horse trainer, instructor, clinician and horse event planner for 6 years. In all of those years I have seen thousands of photos of horses in action, thousands of photos of riders with their horses, and hundreds of photos of me with my horses.

No photographer has ever captured us like this. I couldn’t believe the softness, lines, feel and emotion of the photos. Steadman’s Action Portraits are captivating. His work is completely different from the other equine photographers out there. His photography is art, not just a photo.

These are not typical horse show or horse event photos. If you host horse shows, you should take a look at Steadman’s work. It is a unique opportunity for your clients to have a beautiful photo that is art! I highly recommend Steadman for your next show or a photo session at your barn.

His photos show the action of the horses as they encountered the obstacles on the trail course. Steadman has a talent for not only picking the right moment in a jump or movement, he also creates a portrait that truly looks like “Art.”

I know when I viewed the many finished Action Portraits he made that day I was stunned to see all of the riders looking so good in the pictures.

Somehow the riders who where just out having fun that day, where captured in timeless, beautiful art.

Steadman knows how to capture more than just the moment in the photo. He captures the experience, the confidence, and the human and horse expressions so well.

His compositions of his portraits are really striking as the horses appear to leap off the wall or seem to be in motion.

I also had the opportunity to visit with Steadman in a private viewing after the event. He showed me hundreds of photos he made based on his work with jumping horses and I was thrilled to see what he had done for my group. I lead groups of trail riders. Some of our group has never jumped before. Steadman captured more than a few “first jumps” that day and those photos are spectacular. The riders in my group were also thrilled to see the photos of them jumping. We really were impressed by Steadman’s work. Steadman also showed me a number of photos he made that really tell a story in pictures about what happened that day. Viewing his portfolio of the event was like being there.

Steadman also has an eye for what is important to show regarding horsemanship. I was impressed by what he sees in the horse’s action and the interaction with the riders and the subtle signs of good horsemanship too.

I was impressed when Steadman showed me how large some of his Action Portraits can be made. Like most riders, I have bought small 8×10 prints of myself from horse show photographers, and those usually end up in a drawer and forgotten. Steadman’s work is very different and exciting. His Action Portraits make me want a very large one on canvas to hang on the wall as art!

If I had to describe Steadman’s equestrian photography I would use these words: Art, elegant, beautiful, stunning, unique, masterful, world-class, wonderful, and a good reflection of natural horsemanship…

The creativity of his work shines through as you look over his portfolio of his Equestrian Project. These are not ordinary photos of horses or riding.

Given that he is photographing equestrians from many disciplines of riding, I was impressed that he has made so many beautiful photographs of so many different people and horses in such a short time. Looking at his portfolio, one would think he has been a professional equine photographer for years and years.

Steadman also understands how photos can be used to help a horse professional market their services. He offered me many valuable suggestions. This group of photos represents a new way of presenting my image to the public. He is helpful with his suggestions on how to incorporate the photos into my marketing efforts. I will be working with him in the future to develop my own portfolio of marketing images.

Steadman and I have spent over six hours in focused and friendly conversations about helping my business and my clients reach their fullest potential. I have looked at hundreds of his shots, and seen hundreds of his finished Action Portraits of equestrians. He showed me large photos, the size of a door, which look wonderful and are of high quality. You need to see these photos to fully appreciate the quality of his work. He has created striking photos of both English and Western riders. He makes fantastic portraits of equestrians from seasoned professionals, to rank beginners, to women in their 70′s, to teens and kids.

I am excited to be working with Steadman. His photos are beautiful images that can help me, my students and my clients document and celebrate their passion for horsemanship with outstanding photographs. Steadman knows how to use photographs to tell a story in an authentic manner that reflects my passion, my style, and my personality.

Steadman is a real artist, not just a photographer. He understands people in a rare way. He is professional, personable, honest and friendly. I am confident that he can deliver something beautiful and special to any horse or equestrian. I believe he could help any equestrian get the most special photos of them they have ever seen.

Steadman’s Action Portraits will be the most memorable and beautiful photos many of my clients have ever had.

If you are a serious rider or a horse professional or trainer, I strongly suggest that you have Steadman make a portrait of you. I am confident you will be thrilled, as I am, to see what Steadman can make for you. I can immediately see the high value these photos will have as I present my professional training services in the future.

I was also amazed that he was able to do this without depending on flash or bulky equipment. In fact, he was hardly noticeable as he walked the course, the riders and horses did not notice him. I have given Steadman an open invitation to attend any of my events in the future, and I can’t wait to see what he makes next in his Equestrian Project.

I am thrilled to be a part of his Equestrian Project. He and I have had a long discussion on what makes for better horsemanship, and I admire Steadman’s desire to create authentic images of equestrians. From what I have seen, his project will be world-class and something any equestrian would be proud to be included in. It looks like a wonderful “once in a lifetime” opportunity to me, and I believe it will be the same for you too.”

“What a unique style you have!  All the photos of the TRC you have posted are just beautiful.  I love how you captured the soft look in my horse’s eye as he went over the barrel jump.  He’s normally a spooky little horse, but was having such a good day.

I also liked how you captured the joy or concentration on people’s faces as they interacted with their horse.

Equestrians are a special group of people and have a unique connection with each of their horses.  Thank you for making a special day for me even more special by capturing it in a picture.”

Verbatim Testimonial Letter from an award winning Reining Equestrian: Pat Collura

Source: Pat Collura is a very serious Reining competitor and while relatively new at the sport, she has already won “Rookie of the Year” at a major competition and has a wall full of trophies and awards in this sport.

“When I first met Steadman, he explained to me that he was working on a special equestrian art project and he thought I would be a good addition to his project.  I was a little skeptical when he told me that he is able to capture both people and horses and create with his artistic talent a beautiful portrait that is unlike any others. I have been competing in the sport of reining for a few years and for the last year I have been had what I consider “The Horse of a Lifetime”, and I really wanted a wonderful picture of him to hang in our family room.

Before the photo session, I had assumed that I would prefer an action photo, because most portraits I have seen of a horse and rider just standing still seem dull to me. I was completely surprised when I saw the standing or still portraits Steadman made of me and my horse because I loved them! Even my children loved them.

Steadman made a portrait that shows me and my horse with only the head and shoulders. Steadman assured me that he saw something beautiful at that moment when we were outside.

I was stunned to see this picture of me and my horse looking so good. I just did not anticipate how good Steadman could make me look.

I now know why people choose Steadman as their portrait artist. He is able to see things in a moment we all may consider ordinary, yet his ability to capture something of our personality and soul is extraordinary.

As a mature woman, I suppose it is natural to expect to see some lines and wrinkles on a portrait and, like any woman, I suppose I was concerned about how I would appear in the photos. Yet I was surprised to see my portraits did not emphasize any signs of aging at all and instead I don’t even notice them.

Steadman is a master with light and shadows and I am very pleased by how I look in the portrait photographs. I highly recommend Steadman to riders of every age, but especially to mature women.

Steadman took such care in our photo session to capture the most wonderful photos that depict so many different aspects of this sport.

I am a serious competitor and I want my photos to show my horse looking good, but I also want to look good in action. Steadman made that happen when he made his action portraits of me. Not only do these photos depict the graceful and beautiful movements of the horse, they also are great of me.

I am totally impressed with his artistic talent.

My husband and I were so pleased by Steadman’s portraits of me that we also had Steadman make portraits of my mother-in-law, who is 85 years old. She wanted a special portrait to give to her family and while she had been photographed by other professional photographers in the last year or so, she had never been satisfied with how she looked in those photos.

Steadman made a wonderful set of portraits of her that capture her natural expressions along with her natural beauty. The portraits look so good that they even surprised my husband’s mother. She loved them!

When looking at the photos, it is like one is looking at her and having a conversation with her. So natural and so her!

She also appreciated the time Steadman took to let her feel comfortable in front of the camera. She told us it was a lot of fun for her and she was very pleased by the portraits he made.

My husband’s siblings all enjoyed the photos too. We all agree that this was a very good thing to do and we are so happy we chose Steadman for this special portrait session.

He really understands mature people and the elderly and he helped us with many suggestions to make the experience a special one for all involved. If you have an elderly parent, a mature spouse, or if you are mature yourself, you should see what Steadman can do for you and your family too.

I highly recommend him.”

“Over the past several weeks I have had the opportunity to view the work of photographer Steadman Uhlich and to work with him as we did pictures of horses in training. I was most impressed with Mr. Uhlich’s commitment to making just the right shot so both the horse and the rider look their best. Not only were we able to produce a good number of excellent photos depicting the intricate footwork of reining horses as they go through a training session, and Mr. Uhlich took the time to sit with me and discuss the photos to be sure every detail was as I wanted it to be. Then he went ahead and applied his artful techniques to produce photos with the right composition and finish. Masterful!”

Verbatim Testimonial Letter from a Professional Equestrian: Miranda Holaday-Lyon

Source: Miranda Holaday-Lyon is a two-time National Champion  and a Reserve World Champion Cowboy Mounted Shooting Equestrian.  Not only does she know her six guns and horses, she also has real ranch experience, cattle experience, competitive show experience, AND she breaks Mustangs and trains colts!  She is a real “horsewoman” who also has “Hollywood looks!” She is a very impressive “Buckarette.” She is a true “horseman” and an authentic “buckaroo” (and yes, she is a woman but so good that others use the masculine term as a sign of admiration for her skill).

“As a professional horsewoman I am always looking for positive experiences and the beauty of life. Steadman captures those special moments and brings them to life. He has proven to study the movements of a horse and he knows how they are going to look at a certain moment in stride and he captures them when they look their best.

Steadman looks deeper into a moment than any photographer I have ever met to see the true story behind the photo.

I love to see things in their natural state the way they were originally intended to be without all of the fake ideas that people try to put onto them. Steadman sees those natural beauties and natural lighting to make a picture a true moment captured at the right time. He does not use artificial flash, yet his pictures have beautiful natural light in them.  Just like they say “a picture is worth a thousand words” and Steadman photographs IS the TRUE picture.

I have seen many pictures in my career from professionals all over and in magazines. I have never liked everything about a picture until Steadman showed me some of his photos. He captures the true moment and has educated himself enough about what he is photographing that he knows what the true professionals in that discipline look for.

He respects our status as equine professionals and yet he also showed us ways we could improve our use of images to market our services. He listened carefully to us and then he offered many suggestions for ways we could make better photographs that would impress our market and show our unique skills and style.

Steadman has proven to be a true professional that really does a fantastic job at getting me the pictures I want. He understands what kind of photos I want and need to express myself to my customers. He also has captured photos that I have always wanted for my album, but they are just such top quality that I couldn’t put them in an album but instead want to put them on the wall. He has high standards and he really has the drive to do the best job possible and be the best that he can be while pleasing me and being flexible for my busy schedule.

I can also highly recommend Steadman to other horse professionals and horse trainers. He has given us many ideas that will help us improve our marketing and promotion of our services.  Steadman has a sincerely friendly manner of coaching us on using photos to tell our story to other equestrians.  He has also made wonderful photos of some of our students that have caused them to say “WOW” too.  He really knows how to use photos to help professionals when creating a business image or brand and he gave us lots of advice on how to leverage our strengths.

I also noticed that Steadman is able to make fabulous portraits of riders of all ages, all levels of experience, and whether they ride English or Western.

So often horse people get so deep into their disciplines that they think they have to have something that is seen as special to their riding style. Few people want to cross-over.

Steadman showed us that he has the discerning eye that can see the essentials for any discipline, and the talent to use those things in an artistic view of that discipline.

I know some riders may think that only riding pros, top competitors, or champions will look good in photos like this. Well, I can tell you I have seen Steadman make  wonderful photos of riders who are not pros and even of riders with minimal experience, including rookies and novices. Steadman’s photos of horses look fantastic, whether the horse is a show winning champion, or a raw Mustang we just got from the BLM.  His photos of our Mustangs in training are very impressive too.  He even captured excellent photos of our Mustangs’ first jumps.

Steadman not only makes the photos I always dreamed of having, he also creates images I did not imagine. As I see it, that is the real reason why hiring an artist is very different from hiring a typical photographer.

We all want to hire someone who will make a good photograph, but it is much rarer when you find someone who really sees YOU and what you do as a subject worthy of art.  Steadman’s creativity shows in the way he SEES things, how he imagines the horses in a composition, and what he observes of riders.   When you hire Steadman to be your photographer, you are really hiring an artist to make photographs or art with you in it.

It is a distinction that makes all the difference in what you will see in the final picture you get from him.  I know I expected him to make photographs of me, but I was pleasantly surprised and totally impressed when I saw that he made photos that others see as fine art of the highest quality.

I was also impressed when I saw the amazing detail and quality of some of his large art photos.  These photos were as big as large paintings, some were actually life-size, and they looked like they belong in an art museum.

I know I was not alone when I said “WOW” when I saw these.  Then as he showed us large photo after photo, I kept saying “WOW” and “Awesome.”  Steadman’s art photos really grab you and are stunning.

I know other clients of Steadman have already stated this, but I think it is important for you to know that what you are seeing on his website is just a small part of his work.  There are many more beautiful photos that are not on his site, including some of our favorites, and even the photos shown on his website are usually just a small part of the original picture.

Steadman also created some portraits of us that do not show a horse.   These are some of our favorites and they really are extraordinary photographs that look like they should be in a museum.

I also saw watched Steadman create portraits of a married couple who are in their eighties.  He captured expressions that show their love for one another and he quickly got them to act natural.  His candid portraits of that couple are beautiful and show such warm emotion.

I am also impressed by his artistic skill and his unique vision for the art photos he makes.  We have seen Steadman make photos that look like some of the best Western art we have seen and some look like paintings one would find in a museum. That my husband Mark or I happen to be the person riding the horse in the photo is amazing to us and it gives us a fantastic and unique experience as we see ourselves in a true artist’s artwork. You won’t know that feeling until you have it happen to you when Steadman makes some art with you in it.  It is a real treat that will last a life-time.  I know we are both proud to have been a part of Steadman’s Equestrian Art Project too.

One of Steadman’s art photos of my husband has already sold as a large fine art photograph to an art collector. This was thrilling to both of us too. It is hard to imagine how it feels to be seen in a work of art that unknown people want to buy because they see it as fine art.  I always knew my husband was a work of art, now I have the proof!

I am from Missouri, and there we have the saying “Show me.”  Steadman has really shown us there can be a vast difference in the higher quality and true originality of photos you will see of you, if you hire or commission him to create your portrait.

We have seen Steadman make wonderful portraits of riders, portraits of horses, and truly original action photos that are unlike any we have ever seen before.  I highly recommend him to other equestrians, as I know he has really made my husband and I very happy we commissioned him to make things for us.”

“All I can say is ‘Stunning’! As a professional Reining horse trainer and long-time competitor I have seen more than my share of great equine photographs, but Steadman’s work is more than photos, it is art! I get a monthly publication with all of the best horses in the industry, the owners spare no expense in the portraits and designs in the ads for their horses, but not one of those pictures even comes close to the quality or magnitude of the creations of Steadman.

I met Steadman while he was in Omaha and instantly I knew that I wanted to have him do a portrait for me after seeing his work.

I was very impressed by the candidness and natural feel of the pieces. He captured the horses and people as they were having everyday moments and caught the natural beauty of his clients. While I have had action shots and “candids” done before, none of them had ever had the look that Steadman’s work had.

Steadman came to my barn and took photos of me while I worked, the ease of the session was unlike anything I had ever done before. In previous photo shoots, I had to pose or do things to get my horses to look just right. With Steadman I just rode & worked like I normally would. He took pictures as I did my thing, then he made the adjustments necessary. I was simply amazed at the swiftness in which Steadman had my portraits ready for me to view and order. I am used to waiting weeks to get photographs that I have taken at the shows I attend, but Steadman had my work done in a matter of hours. The images were so clear and sharp, it seems as if I could reach out and feel her mane in my fingers and smell the sweat on her skin.

I didn’t know that action shots could have the quality that Steadman produced. It was incredible the number of different shots that he had taken, it captured every aspect of myself & my horse.

When I saw the photographs he took for me, they brought tears to my eyes as he captured not only the horse I was mounted on, but the very essence of her mother, one of my most prized show horses. It was like stepping back in time and seeing her mother all over again, the way I remember her, young and strong, not the old horse she is now. I never had a portrait done of that mare, but this photograph will allow me to always have a keepsake of her, even though it is her daughter we shot the photos of. I was sincerely amazed at the raw emotion I felt looking at the portrait.

He also got a wonderful candid of my seven month old son and me. I hadn’t commissioned Steadman to take that shot, but he did it on his own and now I have a piece of art of my son that I will forever treasure. I hope that someday my son will come to appreciate the beauty of the moment we were sharing that Steadman captured.

I can’t express enough that his work isn’t photographs as it is art. The emotion of the animal is captured in his work, you can sense the power of the horse and feel what they are feeling. The images draw you in and make it seem as if you are right there. Even people that aren’t horse enthusiasts would have to appreciate these pieces for their quality and uniqueness.

There is no denying that Steadman’s portraits are artwork.

Steadman asked many questions about the look I wanted to have in my portraits, the head carriage and body position that is desirable in the reining discipline. He was not afraid to admit that he was learning about the different areas of the horse industry and was very willing to take suggestions for what I found preferable. It was nice to have someone that was truly interested in my line of work and valued the knowledge I had to impart. I feel that we both left the experience richer than when we entered it.

I am impressed beyond words at the magnitude of the art that Steadman produced for me. The work is priceless to our family and will be an heirloom to pass to our children. I fully believe that Steadman’s art will become more and more valuable as the years pass. I would encourage everyone that wants a piece of their own history to commission a portrait by Steadman. I entered this wanting a portrait, but walked away with timeless art.”

Dear Steadman,We received the canvases and thought they all looked great, especially Bill’s.

You have an uncanny knack for capturing the moment and giving that moment the timeless quality of a fine painting.  We are impressed that you have immersed yourself in our sport and devoted this part of your life to the understanding of our love for our favorite pastime, our horses, the hounds we follow, and the coyote who leads us such a merry chase.

Your photography pulls no punches regarding the reality of sweating horses and grimacing, intent riders, yet it somehow manages at the same time to infuse a romantic quality and a mystique to this sport we love.

We are pleased to have known you and to have had the opportunity to see your work, and we look forward to the publication of your book.

“A friend of mine introduced me to Steadman Uhlich at the barn where I ride my horses. I was in a rush at the time of our photo session so Steadman took beautiful pictures very quickly and was easy to work with during the whole experience.

Steadman used the natural light at the barn and did not use a flash so he would not spook my horse. I appreciated that, and my horse appreciated his offerings of treats!

The session was convenient for me, as he did not need much time. He had a vast variety of Artist’s Choice prints to show me, and I was surprised at the fresh, intricate detail in his work. Several friends of mine were immediately interested in pictures for themselves.

My friends thought the portraits with me and my horse should be in a Ralph Lauren ad.

I framed the portraits and I will always treasure them, as I love my horse. He even captured one where my horse is kissing me with her eyes closed! The larger images were so detailed they looked almost life-like. All in all the experience was well worth it.”

Equestrian Portrait by Steadman Uhlich - The Kiss

Verbatim Testimonial Letter from an Equestrian.

Thank you sooo much for everything you have done and the hours and talent you have dedicated to just lil ol me! I feel like a celebrity! My thoughts on photos: at first the photo you sent me took me aback because I was expecting something much different and my monitor didn’t make it look like is truly was, but once I was able to review them later, I was able to look through my own eyes, and I was truly amazed at what I saw!

No one has ever been able to capture “me” at my best…ever. I have never trusted anyone enough to see me through a lens. But with you, at first I was nervous, and then towards the end I just was enjoying you and the session and you were so funny and I was with my dream horse, and life was good, and you captured that!

And I think in the end, those photos and the one that you picked are some of my favorites! As I have said, you are brilliant, and I feel humbled that you are willing to share your talent with me. God bless you.”

These portraits were done while I visited them as part of my Visiting Artist Program for 2011.

For this particular Host-Client, I have created a set of unique and extraordinary portraits and images of his daughter, her horse, and his daughter with her horse. Most of these images are not shown on this site or the internet on purpose, as they are also intended for inclusion in a future book on my work.

Verbatim Testimonial Letter from the Parent of an Equestrian Subject. The parent was also a Host Participant in Steadman’s Visiting Artist Program

To Whom it May Concern: “In the last 14 years that our daughter has ridden horses and competed, we have taken thousands of photos of our daughter and had many professional photographers take her picture as she performed in countless horse shows or competitions.

Steadman’s photos, taken both at our barn’s arena while our daughter practiced and at our home are unlike any that I have seen before.”“Steadman made his artistic portraits of our daughter in a small space in our house, yet the photos look like they were made in a large studio. I am amazed at how he does it. I have a nice DSLR camera and I take lots of photos of my daughter, but he was able to capture something else and something new and unique.”

“Some of the most interesting and unique images Steadman made are not shown on his posters or his website. He told us about this prior to photographing our daughter, and I did not really understand at the time. Now I understand.

You really need to see these for yourself. It is amazing to see how a single photo session can yield so many different looks and expressions and how he uses his artist’s eye to make something special for each person. He made some pictures for my daughter that I am sure she will use for years because they are elegant and striking. These are not ordinary portrait photographs.”“It was a real honor that Steadman selected one image from our daughter’s session to create a work of his art using our horse as the model. He told us that was something he had as a goal and I just did not anticipate the image being so beautiful and surprisingly different. I have photographed that horse many times and I never saw this and I have not seen anything like it from any other photographer or artist. We are very proud it is one of our horses. It is not just another portrait, it is art.”

“Steadman also made some incredible photos of my daughter practicing in a large dark indoor arena in the dead of winter. I don’t know how he did it.

It amazed me that he did this without using any flash at all, so he would not disturb the horse and rider. He just used the natural light that was available to him. The photos are beautiful and natural looking. When I first saw them, I said “WOW.”

“I highly recommend that everyone who loves horses take advantage of this chance to get something special by Steadman. These are not just snapshots and they are not the common event photos we see at every competition. We have seen many professional equine photographers as we have traveled the country to competitions, including the Nationals, the Colorado Horse Park, and the Kentucky Horse Park, and these photos Steadman has made are unlike anything I have seen before.

These portraits Steadman will make of your horse and the rider are going to be something you will not regret buying. These stand out from the crowd. Steadman Uhlich and his art are definitely “World Class.”"

“He definitely has a different approach to working with people and horses. I now know why so many people have trusted him to make something special. It is rare to find someone whom you can trust so much and still be surprised at the outcome and have your expectations exceeded.”

“As a parent of someone who loves horses and has competed locally, regionally and even nationally for years, and as an owner of multiple horses, I know that it is smart to invest in quality. I cannot over-emphasize the high quality of what you will get if you hire Steadman to make a portrait of you or your horse.

We know that our horse will be a part of our family for several more years and we are prepared to spend what it takes to care for that horse and to help our daughter get where she wants to go in competition. With a portrait by Steadman, we will have a beautiful, extraordinary, and lasting reminder of that horse and our rider’s beauty. These really are heirlooms in the making. Without a doubt, he is worth it.”— Dr. M.W., Omaha, Nebraska (name withheld to protect privacy)

Second Example of Visiting Artist Program Results for a Host Family

Verbatim Testimonial Letter from the Parent of an Equestrian Subject. The parent was also a Host Participant in Steadman’s Visiting Artist Program.

To whom it may concern:
I did not know Steadman Uhlich prior to meeting him recently after seeing his work. I checked into his background, looked at his online portfolios, read his testimonials, and after discussing this with my husband, we decided to host Steadman at our home as participants in his Visiting Artists Program. I am very glad we made that decision.

We are “Empty Nesters” and my husband and I first met with Steadman and spent some hours getting to know him. He has proven to be a good house guest, good company, and even a good cook. My husband and I have enjoyed many hours of conversations with him and time spent together at horse events and dinners. I feel we have not only gained things in art created for us, but we have also made a new friend. He is someone you can trust. Now as our time as his hosts has reached an end, I want to share with you my experience as a Host in his Visiting Artist Program.

Soon after arriving, Steadman arranged a photo session with my adult daughter and her horses. I was present at the photo shoot and observed how he worked with her, the horses and her dogs.
Despite the cold weather, the windy conditions, the leaf-less trees and the rather drab surroundings of a typical Omaha winter’s day, Steadman told us the conditions were very good for portraits.
I was a bit apprehensive because our horses are in their furry winter coats. I was not sure if those would look good in a photo. Steadman assured us the furry winter condition of their coats would be a positive thing to see in the final photos.

A few days after the photo shoot, Steadman showed us the results from his work. I was surprised by how quickly we were able to see some results from the photo shoot. While I had viewed many of Steadman’s portraits in his online portfolios, I was not prepared for what I saw in the work he had done for us.

First, let me tell you that my daughter has ridden and competed with horses for many years. She rides Western, Rodeo and English styles of riding. I have been around horses all my life and worked with them professionally. I have many photos of my daughter and her horses taken by professional photographers. So I have a good idea of how she and the horses look when photographed by a typical professional photographer.

What did I see when I saw the photos Steadman made for us? I was completely surprised by Steadman’s portraits of our horses. While I had been present the entire time and had been just a few feet from the horse, I did not imagine the finished portraits would look as they did. My first impression when seeing the portraits was “WOW!”

Putting it simply, these are not your typical horse photos. Steadman’s vision for these horses made them look special.

I had earlier worried a bit that the winter coat furry look of our horses would not look good. When Steadman showed us the final portraits, I then saw how the natural winter coat looked wonderful in his photos. The textures of the hair and mane look so real and life-like it looks like our horse is standing right in front of you and you could reach into the picture to touch his hair. I had also worried some that the harsh sunlight of the day, and the drab leaf-less trees and surrounding land of the season would not look good for the photo session. I can tell you that the finished portrait and photos look amazing and the background of your barn or paddock is no reason to be concerned.

When I showed the photo of my daughter with her horse to my colleagues at work, other friends, and other horse people, they were all very impressed by the high quality and the expression of emotion shown in the photo.

We have all seen photos of girls holding their horse, but this was a photo that showed us all the joy she feels with that horse. This portrait of my daughter with her horse stands out from the hundreds of portraits I have seen of my daughter’s friends and other riders with their horses. It made me glad I took the step to hire Steadman.

Steadman works well with horses and sees the details of good horsemanship too. Steadman has an eye for details and for the beauty of the individual. His portraits of my daughter capture her spirit, her confidence, and her skill at handling a horse. When you see the large prints, you can see the details of good horsemanship that make a difference. He captured that in stunning photos that really must be seen large to be fully appreciated.

As Steadman is learning about horses and how to handle them, he worked well with the horses. As he captures them in action, he never used a flash. Because he never uses a flash, the horses are comfortable around the camera; it shows as a relaxed look in their eyes, in every portrait. His use of natural light in the barn and outside was amazing.

Steadman also surprised us with a unique work of art in another photo. He calls this image “Moonlight” as it shows our gelding by moonlight. His art photo of one of our horses really looks like a painting. Steadman showed us a very large print of this and it is hard to describe how impressive it appears when anyone sees the larger print. Steadman also spent the time and helped me consider the best ways to show it in our home, including choices of frames, lighting, location, and sizes that fit our home decor.

Over the many years I have shown, ridden, and been around horses, I have never seen an art photo like this. It is unique and beautiful. It IS a work of art. And it is OUR horse that is now art.

You might see a little version of this on Steadman’s website, but you must see a large print to get a real understanding of how impressive it is.

I recently went to the Nebraska Horse Expo and while there viewed over 100 photos of horses that had been entered in a photography contest. There was nothing there that was as impressive as Steadman’s photos. Even the photos entered and displayed by professional photographers looked ordinary in comparison.

Steadman also works well with kids. Steadman also created very special portrait photos of my two young grand daughters. He captured their personalities and the photos are really beautiful, funny, and touching. These portraits are also unlike any I have seen before. He created one while working with horses and a young girl, I didn’t think that would be easy. The other portrait was created while working with my youngest grand daughter who is two years old and full of energy. His suggestions for how to make these special portraits have given our family something priceless that crosses generations.

Steadman works well with mature women too. Like many middle-aged women, I was apprehensive about having a portrait photograph of me. Steadman worked with me and my concerns, helped me get the confidence to get in front of his camera, and made the experience fun. He also made me look 10 years younger too! All of this was done in a natural setting that reflects my life and my love of horses.

I recommend you take this opportunity to have Steadman make a portrait of you or your horse or someone in your family, regardless of their age. Based on my own experience, I am confident the results will pleasantly surprise you and be something you will consider a good decision and an excellent purchase. I believe you can trust Steadman to do as he promises and even that he will probably exceed your expectations.

Furthermore, if you have the means to serve as a Host for him within his Visiting Artist Program, I believe it is a fabulous opportunity for you or your family. His work speaks for itself, but I must tell you that there are things he makes that you will not see on his website. We saw them created and they are and now we understand the special experience of having art created for us by a true artist.

Steadman created portraits for a friend of mine too. I can also tell you that he has also created four portraits for a close friend of mine who is another client of his. I learned about Steadman after seeing her portraits. Those portraits are also wonderful as they capture the character of her children and husband.

Verbatim Testimonial Letter from a Barrel Racer who served as a host for 60 days

Source: River is a former bull and bronc rider (women’s rodeo), a serious barrel racer, and an exemplary “cowgirl.”   She is also a horse owner (several ) and she has two chihuahua dogs who follow her everywhere and watch from her truck when she rides at her ranch.  I was privileged to spend two months as her guest in a small Texas town, Tioga (population 580).  I photographed River when she competed in the Iron Cowgirl Contest.

“To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing this letter in full support of Steadman Uhlich, Artist and Photographer.

What distinguishes Steadman from other rodeo/western photographers is that he has a remarkable vision and talent for uniquely capturing the beautiful, powerful bond between people and their horses.

He also successfully captures the spirit of rodeo–a signature American sport that, sadly, is quietly fading from our culture.

Steadman creates soul-stirring images that range from a cowboy on the verge of being flung from his saddle by a raging bronc to an amusing panorama of spectators soaking in the glitz and din at a small town rodeo.

As I was viewing his photos of bronc riders I felt myself drawn back into “that” world. In my twenties, I travelled to various “all-girl” rodeos throughout Texas and Oklahoma riding bucking bulls and broncs. Steadman’s photos made me re-live what really goes on during those teethclenching rides. Instantly, I felt nostalgia and a little envy for those who choose to live wild, determined, and free.

When I saw a recent photo Steadman took of me competing in barrel racing, I didn’t recognize myself. First, I identified my horse and then thought, “Hey, that’s me!” That day I did not do well with my horse, and I was pretty down about our performance. After seeing Steadman’s photo (weeks later), I saw things differently. I saw a powerful athlete churning up the ground and a balanced, composed rider amid that chaotic turn.

Consequently, success to me is not just about a fast run and a check. It’s about the beautiful journey: doing the work, taking chances, moving through rough days, and not giving up.”
